We haven't actually! It's called the Canon 500D in Europe and a good thorough review telling you more than you want to know is here Canon EOS 500D / Digital Rebel T1i Review: 1. Introduction: Digital Photography Review (http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/CanonEOS500D/)

Basically though it's superb. I can't fault it at its price point. Played with it, loved it and if you've seen HD movie mode from it, bye bye camcorder.

Great buy IMHO

I may have found "the one" :)

Had a tinker with it this morning...it's going to be hard to leave for Disney without buying it....

i know stupid isnt it, been the same with all the canon slr's

movie mode sounds really cool :D

I feel like I'm always the disagreeable one  but anyway...

The sensors in the camcorders, especially consumer ones, tend to be positively tiny v SLRs. Then the lenses you can get for the Dslrs are amazing v. the built in camcorder ones. The low light capability of that canon T1i with a cheapy 50mm f1.8 lens, well let's just say wow.

They don't take up any more memory on a DSLR than they would on a modern HD camcorder so that's not really such an issue any more.

Not that it's all rosy, some things like autofocus during filming tend to be better on the camcorders but for quality of video, you'd have to pay way more than what you'd pay for that canon before you came anywhere close with a camcorder.

Sure you can! The largest compact flash cards are 64GB :) although yeah, 32 is more common at the moment perhaps.

It just isn't going to be a problem though. I think the cards are cheap enough now that you can just easily swap one out and put another in. Some of the camcorders with internal drives dont have additional memory slots so once that 40GB is filled you HAVE to copy it all to your computer. At least with the canon you can buy another compact flash card and carry on shooting.

Some of the videos around the web from these cameras is simply amazing. I really didn't expect great things but I'm pretty impressed

Britchick

good point! we don't have a hd camcorder so hadn't thought of the downloading problem. How much recording time would you get on a 32gb then?

cool didnt know that, got to be better than a cam then.

thats why i wouldnt buy a hdd cam and the dvd format :nono: and stuck with the tapes as i can keep them for backup or just make different videoes with the same footage :)

New Canon 7D Video Vienna is not Beijing | Cinesky (http://cineskyvfx.com/blog/?p=112)

Here's a sample video from one of these canon cams. I Dont know if it'll impress you or not, but it impresses me.

Taken without loads of video lights around the place, just with a digital SLR around vienna.

Look at the darkness of the scenes and think what your camcorder would make of it. I know mine would be all noisy and either grey or green night time mode would probably want to kick in. See how the canon HD video preserves the colours even in that low light? The definition of the video and the sharpness of the whole scene?

On a normal consumer camcorder pretty much everything is in focus but when you watch a movie, you get that lovely shallow depth of field where the subject is sharp and in focus but the background is nicely blurry. It really makes a difference between something looking pro and something looking like a cheapy cam. Notice the lovely effects in this video all because of the availability of large aperture lenses like say 50mm 1.8 (about 60quid) and the larger sensor.

Becca, you must get this to go with it

Jon is buying it for me today :)

It's a MASSIVE splurge I know, but Jon's treating and I'm accepting. Best Buy is running a special this month - no interest on purchases if paid for within 18 months. I got a (small) raise last week and after doing the math, I sorted out that I could have it totally paid off w/ that money before the 18 mths is up. I've been looking at it for weeks and I really just *want* it!! I'm a tad bit gutted about the fact that last week they were selling the camera, an extra lens and a bag for $123 less than the separate purchase price and this week it's disappeared...but that's ok, I'll just buy the camera for now and perhaps ask for the lens from Santa.

My question now is what size SD memory card *should* I buy? Taking into consideration, I'll mostly be taking photos and *short* vid clips (say, less than 60 seconds each) AND my rather irrational fear of oversized memory cards (I'm always afraid I'll have the massive memory card filled with all my photos and it will go bad...the classic "all your eggs in one basket" sort of mentality).

OMG, Jules...I REALLY want that.

keith
05-10-2009, 02:11 PM
Im beyond excited for you! That's just a heck of a brilliant camera! you're going to have SO much fun and given your talent, wow.

Size card... well 4GB are pretty economic these days! 2GB if you're worrying but I think 4 is a decent compromise.

That 50mm f1.8 lens is and always has been canon's bargain lens. Sharper than lenses you'll pay 1000s for and less than $100 :) Not a zoom lens of course but still a bargain

Beccaberry
05-10-2009, 02:15 PM
Oooh thanks you, I was just texting Jon that I thought the 4G was a decent choice, but that I was checking w/ "the professionals"

I'm thinking if I buy 2 4G cards I should be ok for now...

I'm so flippin' excited!!!! :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

ukwdwnut
05-10-2009, 02:37 PM
ihavent needed one as yet becca, i think the canon one is good for 500 or more photos on a single charge

i did buy some non canon ones what a pile of crud they are they are going straight in the bin

Britchick
05-10-2009, 02:38 PM
I've haven't found that i have needed one yet but i don't shoot video. Depends how many photos/video you're going to take and how much playback you're going to do.

is there a guide to how long the battery lasts?

Beccaberry
05-10-2009, 02:40 PM
Good point, Keith...though that good be dangerous when I'm in "vacation mode"

Off to look for a guide now...

keith
05-10-2009, 02:40 PM
Most people say the first charge gives 250 ish but subsequent charges give 500-750 depending how much flash/video etc.

one thing id love to get is an L glass lens but cant justify the price for the amount i use the camera

Britchick
05-10-2009, 02:45 PM
400 is the official amount of shots - i would get a spare one if you can. You don't want to run out of battery.

Beccaberry
05-10-2009, 02:50 PM
True...especially at the F&W Festival!!!

And a spare will only run me about 40 dollars or so...the question is, if I charge it up and then, say, don't use it for three days...will it still hold the charge?

catrancher

These newer batteries are all Lithium Ion. They'll hold their charge for weeks if not months. I've got a spare for my Nikon that I charged a good six months ago and it still shows as 100%.

Tom (:macwave:... I'm charged up!)

yep, it's great- i can fit all my lenses (at the moment) flash, chargers etc and a wallet and keys and my iphone. oh and tissues, headache tablets........you get the picture lol

you swing it round to your front- unzip and you can access the camera without things falling out. It's easy to carry too because it goes across your shoulder and is supported at the waist too so the weight is spread out.

Quick question..the sales associate is recommending the UV Filter to protect the lens...Yes or No?

That or a polarizing filter. I like the polarizer better as it gives you the protection and provides a polarizer that will help bring out the sky, clouds, etc. in outdoor shots.

Tom (:macwave:... love those clouds!)

josh.p.
05-10-2009, 04:59 PM
I asked Keith the same question and he said it's 50/50...

Some argue that it offers great protection if nothing else... Others argue that why buy an expensive lens only to just put a cheap glass filter over it?
