I love the atmosphere you get wandering through the Osborne Lights....listening to carols while the 'snow' is falling and gazing in bewilderment at all of the lights.
Thanks for the photos Ann

The lights are colored now? Weren't they all white before? I guess it's been a few years since i've been at christmas time. That was always a highlight tho :)

There are clear lights too Cristine. Originally, there were more clear than color, but were still some with color. Now they have added millions more, most of which are in color.

It is a breathtaking sight.

Great photos!!

We walked through there last week and saw all the lights attached to the buildings and strung across the street and could only imagine what it would look like lit up.

As pretty as this is I thought it was a lot more spectacular when they had all of the backlot homes and yards decorated and you walked through that area.

I've never seen these in real life. They look spectacular! Great pics Ann...I actually said "wow!!" when I saw them!

It is an overwhelming display, Deb. The original is the favorite of many, but WDW added so many millions of lights to the original that the display had to change.

It took a bit of getting used to, but I'm ok with this one now if only for the sheer brilliance of all the lights. It's not quite up to the wattage of Herself's Christmas Tree, but runs a close second.

Once the display has been up for a bit, it does get somewhat less crowded. When it first goes up, and over the weekends, and around Thanksgiving, plus the week of Christmas sees the highest number of guests viewing the spectacle. The little bits of days in between are a bit slower so you can wander and roam at your leisure.

Once in awhile, there will actually be a frosty night (like the year we took little Seth when he was living with us) which will really put you in the Christmas spirit if you associate Christmas with a cold winter.

I agree, I miss that as well.

They were switched on at 6pm today so yeah, 6 seems to be the time at the moment

I agree with everyone else though, WAY better when they had the backlot homes and yards

To be honest, they've gone overboard with plastering blocks of lights up in every available space so they can do the, admittedly cool, dancing lights.

I'd far rather some houses/shops etc with some well chosen lights than every inch of every wall covered

Tink

Yes, that's so true. It was (would be) much nicer if there were an orchestrated theme other than put up as many lights as space will allow.

It's still impressive if for nothing more than sheer volume, but it's more a case of quantity wins out over quality of display.

I didn't go till 2002 my very first December visit . So, I never saw the lights in the backlot area . I bet that was pretty .

I guess the going overboard with lights is kind of what the Osbournes are known for, lol.

I guess the going overboard with lights is kind of what the Osbournes are known for, lol.

totally  but there's overboard with a purpose and then there's just blat millions of lights and turn them on yah know?

I could've strolled down the old streets with lights in the windows and the gardens for hours. They could've put a street from disneyworld to disneyland, put the lights on there and I'd have walked between the two before realising it ;) but now I just find I can stand in the middle, see the whole thing and once the lights have danced to a song well, it's kinda all done

Remember when they gave out the special glasses that allowed you to see angels in the lights? Do they still do that?

I'd like to know this too. I forgot to ask for them last year.

keith
15-11-2009, 02:45 PM
I didn't try to get them this year but last year you could get them if you were an AP holder by asking at the desk right near the front of the park as you first go in, next to oscars.

Last year there were also CMs walking around and if you asked nicely, even without an AP, they'd give out the glasses.

HOWEVER, the reason I didn't both this year is that the effect was nothing like it was a few years ago with dancing angels and so on. All they seem to do now is kinda add multiple lights round each light if that makes sense.

I still have mine from years back .

It'll be "pay-per-light" next year.

COME ON EVERYONE!!!! just 10 more texts at $1.50 to w-disney-light-me-up and we'll get that next strip of lights lit! Remember, only 1.4million lights left!

Charging for the glasses??? I'd rather they weren't available at all than to know they are charging for them. That makes me really sad :(

Nit picking, isn't it? It's that sort of thing that makes WDW look too mingy for words. :(

BigThunder
16-11-2009, 04:12 PM
Yeah, I guess to those that don't know better they don't think twice about it but those of us that do....well, it just seems like they are trying to squeeze every nickle & dime they can out of us.

I can remember for a couple years of our trips to WDW they had those Mickey shaped straws at the resort food court check outs for free. My kids thought they were great & I thought how nice to give these away. And then on one of our trips suddenly the straws were fifty cents each. Ok, yes, that's not a lot of money but still....it really annoyed me. I'm just being picky myself I guess, lol.

Gosh I had almost forgotten all about those glasses BT. And now they have the nerve to charge for them? Keith did you say they were free for AP holders?
