View Full Version : Almost time for my op

Wendy

Well, the day has finally arrived  I have to be in between 7.00am to 7.30am tomorrow morning. I have been told that it will be a 45 minute op and depending on how I am afterwards, I can go home later that day :fingers:

When I saw the pre-assessment nurse last week, she did an ecg and other bits and bobs. I also had to have mrsa swabs taken because Chris had been in hospital within the last 12 months, I haven't heard anything so that was obviously clear :) She said that I was the 2nd on the list and I did tell her about my panic attacks so she made a note - I wasn't going to say anythng but Chris said I should as I just never know what will bring one on and as stress is one of the biggest causes, as usual he is probably right

I am hoping and praying that it will make a difference because it is so painful again at the moment :fingers: The consultant as explained though that it might not make a difference but he will do what he can. It is mainly to see if I need a full or partial knee replacement.

I'm not sure what happens afterwards, I know I will be strapped up for a few days and I must do some excercises, but other than that I don't know

I will get Chris to let you know how it went and I will log on when I can :hug2:

Just think about how mobile you will be after the operation, and that hopefully will make it more bearable for you.

Thanks for all the well wishes, I know it means a lot to Wen and to me.

The operation went as well as the doctor expected, he couldn't do very much unfortunately but he was able to take away some loose cartiledge and flushed the knee through. The inside of the knee is virtually disintigrated and the outside is better but he said it will no doubt go the same way. He doesn't seem to think that Wen will see much difference in pain but he is hopeful that with the loose bit gone it won't keep getting trapped.

He said that it is definitely osteoarthritis and he hasn't seen it so agressive before in someone Wen's age. He said that it is definitely hereditry as both her parents had it,her Dad was quite bad with it.

We have to go back in a week and he will talk to us then in more detail but he did say that he thought the best way for the moment is to try and control the pain with the right medication.

She is in a lot of pain and she has to wear surgical stockings for 7 days - you can guess how she took that! She is on crutches - she has no co-ordination at all - and has to keep her leg elevated.

Right now she is in bed but I promised her I would let you know.

I'm off with her tomorrow to make sure she does as shes told but I'm sure she will be on at some point.

Thank you Keith for letting everyone know. We must catch up sometime and you can tell me all about your new toy!!!

I forgot to tell Issy that yes I cooked tea tonight and I managed to keep her out of the kitchen!!!! Its sad because that told me how much she must be hurting, nothing keeps her out of her kitchen.

Deb, you know her well, too independant, she's a carer not a patient.

Now Wendy, you must wear the TED hose. They will prevent any embolism and that is a critically important thing.

Do what your Doc and your Chris say. (Yep, you must). I know it's hard to be in bed, but it's really for the best. The knee seems to be in a bad way, so you'll have to take care of it. :hug2:

We'll be happy to see you on here if you can make it!

Sooooo if Chris says to buy him a new camera, Wendy must obey? :D

(see Chris! I told you we'd get there in the end ;)

As you can see we are all thinking of her right now, so please give her our love and best wishes.
BTW, the stockings aren`t wrinkly like Nora Batty`s are they? It could be quite a turn on for some!

Chris, thanks for the update. Any chance they may want to do a knee replacement surgery? I hope this surgery helps.

Chris, thanks for the update. Any chance they may want to do a knee replacement surgery? I hope this surgery helps.

Hi John :hug2: when the doc came to see me afterwards he said if I was 10 years older he would be saying replacement, but he seemed very wary about letting me have one now. I think it's going to be pain management for the time being and see how it goes

Chris thinks there's more to it because the doc did say before that I wouldn't have to wait for a replacement if I needed one, so who knows, I guess he will tell us on Tuesday.
