One I particularly like is call "Shazam".

You hear a song somewhere but can't identify the name of it. Using Shazam, you can have your iPhone listen to the song and after 30 seconds or so, it will tell you the name of the song. Mines gotten most of them right. Quite amazing actually. :mental:

Tom (:macwave:... useful little thing!)

Doodle Jump! Most addictive and so much fun! I also like Sky news, Harbor Master, Tweetdeck, Sneezies and I have an amazing Jamie Oliver app. Oh and Facebook is good if you use it.

I love my iPhone!

My fave free app is Cool Facts. It tells me all sorts of interesting info. There is also a sex facts one too that is very interesting.

The BEST one that I paid for ($1.99 I think) is WDW wait times. For instance, RIGHT NOW, Peter Pan's Flight is 674 miles from me with a 25 minute wait.

Herself's Droid is faster and easier to use than my iPhone. :sigh: Has wicked apps for it too... :sigh: Voice dials too... :sigh: Plus has the Verizon network... :sigh:

I really don't much like my iPhone or AT&T. :sigh:

Did I mention lately that I hate my iPhone? The stupid thing powered down today and I couldn't get it restarted for love or money.

Randomly, as if by magic it just decided to work... :sigh:

It was really bad timing (is it ever good timing to be without a work phone) as I use it as a sort of GPS too. (Maps app). What a ripping pain in the neck.

I don't know why it doesn't like me. :sigh: I know AT&T coverage is rubbish, but that's not the phone's fault. Not working properly, THAT is the phone...

I so wish my workplace hadn't switched me from Verizon to AT&T. :sorry:

Maybe it's just a bad phone...could you have it replaced?

Before I bought the Eris, I was on my 4th replacement of the phone I had.

It's a good point :/ admittedly I don't use the maps app much on the phone, perhaps if I did I'd see instability too, but that aside I've had every version from the first one up and they've all performed really well for me

This kinda sounds like the coma problem that was introduced with the 3.1 version of the OS. Supposedly also fixed with the 3.1.2 version. What version have you got, Tink?

Tom (:macwave:... curiouser and curiouser )

Tink
01-12-2009, 01:04 PM
Uh huh. It's a 3.1 (7C144). That's it isn't it? I have the rubbishy older model. Gotta' love the workplace... not. :sigh:

Tink
01-12-2009, 01:05 PM
So does that mean I shouldn't be using the maps application? I'm going to get a real gps, just haven't had the extra funds to do that just yet. I was just using maps to get me through until I bought a gps...

Guess I'll do the old, google map and print, routine. :sigh:

You may want to plug it into iTunes and upgrade it to the 3.1.2 release then. That may help your problem. Or, if it's work supplied, go yell at your IT guys to upgrade it.

Tom (:macwave:... was it supposed to do that?)

Tink
01-12-2009, 01:15 PM
Well, if I ask them to do it, that means it has to go to Seattle. :sigh:

Can I plug it in myself, or because it is a corporate account am I going to run into trouble with trying to download or upgrade anything?

Not sure on that one. Depends on how they structured it I suppose. If the phone is tied to you personally you'd probably be all right. If it's a corporate account, I'm not sure.

Maybe an email to your corporate folks would be the best recourse.

Sorry I can't help more!

Tom (:macwave:... close, but so far away)

Tink
01-12-2009, 02:05 PM

I've had a reply from the corporate office. They told me to take it into an Apple store! Gotta' love it.

They did say I could try the upgrade myself if I had a good data connection. Ummmm... doesn't that just mean on the t'internet?

Yep! Zactly.

As long as you have a reliable broadband connection, you should be fine. Just bring up iTunes, plug your iPhone in and see what happens.

Tom (:macwave:... if it blows up, it's not my fault! :laugh2: Just kidding!)

Tink do you not get a message come up on screen telling you there is a software update available when you connect it to your computer?

Tink

No... I get a pop up that tells me "the camera is now connected" which of course, confuses me mightily.

I get that at work - Windows recognises the hard drive in the phone, but iTunes is not installed so it can't do much more. Install iTunes, and make sure it's as up to date as can be. Then plug your phone in, and update it.

Just out of interest, is your phone an original iPhone, a 3G, or a 3GS? It may make a difference as to which apps you could use to get better use out of your phone.

Tink
02-12-2009, 10:04 AM
It's a 3G and you know? I forgot that iTunes is no longer installed on this computer. I imagine it was a casualty of its having been rebuilt.

So, I could do the same if I plug it into my iMac at home, yes? I have iTunes there and I'd not have to worry about installing iTunes on this laptop.

Just a note to keep in mind about using your Mac to do this.

Once you connect your iPhone and get into iTunes and start the sync process, you'll probably get a couple of popups telling you things like:

"found contacts on your iPhone that aren't in your Address Book" - for this I'd choose the "merge" option. This will add the contacts on your iPhone to your Address Book application but still keep everything you had in there before.
"found purchased items on your iPhone that are not in your library" - this is telling you that it found songs/videos/apps/etc on your iPhone that aren't in your iTunes library on your Mac. It will give you the option to add them to your iTunes library.

Basically it will try to ensure that your iTunes library on your Mac matches up with what's on your iPhone. Generally, it's a fairly easy process.

I'd run it through the sync process one time first before I tried the OS upgrade. Get everything sorted out before doing the upgrade.

All that said, I'd say go ahead and plug it into your Mac and see what it says. Keep in mind that on your Mac, iPhoto will probably be the thing that opens automatically. What happens is that if your iPhone has pictures on it that you've taken, your Mac will see it as a camera and automatically open iPhoto for you. You'd have to manually open iTunes.

If there's no pictures on your iPhone camera roll, iTunes should automatically open.

If all else fails, there's always the Apple Genius bar!

Hope this helps!

Tom (:macwave:... let us know how it goes!)

MarkE
02-12-2009, 03:02 PM
I second Tom's opinion, the Imac is the way to go, and syncing it first makes sure that if everything fails, you have an updated backup to restore from. But it won't fail.

Keep a cable at work though, it charges the phone without itunes, and I often forget to charge it at home...

Tink
02-12-2009, 05:22 PM
I don't go anywhere without the cable. The thing can't hold a charge to save its soul. I often have to charge it during the day.

Good grief! Have you tried turning 3G off? If you're not doing a lot of internet access where you need 3G speeds, turning 3G off can significantly improve your battery life.

Tom (:macwave:... I'm still a 2G kind of guy!)

Tink

Tap the "Settings" app. Tap "General", then tap "Network". Should be a setting on that page to "Enable 3G". Tap the switch to turn on or off.

How does turning it off affect what my phone can or does, do?

Basically, 3G gives you faster internet speeds. So web pages or email load faster because the data they're made of can be transmitted to your phone faster. But 3G takes a lot of power. So, turning if off saves on your battery.

How will it affect what your phone can or can't do? It won't. All that will happen is that webpages, email, maps, etc. will load slower. They'll still load. Just not as fast as they do when 3G is turned on.

Tom (:macwave:... sometimes, slower is better!)

Keith
02-12-2009, 07:06 PM
PLUS, as per verizons latest adverts, at&t has AWFUL 3G coverage which has two consequences

1. you wont lose anything by turning it off!
2. it'll be sitting there all day trying to find a 3G signal, perhaps half finding one, losing it again and so on. Using WAY more power than necessary and probably causing additional slowness in your interactions with the device

All in all, Tom's suggestion is a great one to try

(the other battery gazumper is GPS/location services but since you're using mapping applications you may not be so keen on turning that off)
