I`ve just had a look at the shore excursions on offer by DCL for our cruise in July and came across this one for when we dock at Warnemunde.

"Building the Disney Dream - Shipyard Visit"
Be part of the most exclusive tour to ever be offered to Disney Cruise Line! On this tour, you`ll be flown by private chartered plane to Papenburg, home of the World renowned Meyer Werft shipyard and birthplace of German iron shipbuilding. Here, you will have a guided tour of the incredible facility, including viewing the Disney Dream, which is currently under construction.

The only problem is that we will only be at Warnemunde for one day and I so want to see Berlin [Brandenburg Gate, remains of the Wall etc.etc.]
Decisions, decisions.

Oh wow. Tough call, they both sound brilliant! Will you be back that way another time? If so I think I'd take the excursion as it seems a bit more "once in a lifetime" since the next time you pass through the Dream will most likely be completed.

Terry,

Here's my tuppence. For what it's worth.

Berlin will be there for quite a while yet. At least I think it will. If you really want to see Berlin, it wouldn't be out of the question for you and Sue to pop over there at almost any time.

However, the Dream goes into service in 2011. It won't be there after that. I would view seeing it being constructed as a once in a lifetime experience that would never be available again.

That's how I feel. Of course, if I were going along, Carol might have slightly different ideas.
In that case, I'd be wrong. :mental:

Tom (:macwave:... who knows which side of the toast the jam goes on!)

That`s very true Tom [and Becca].
Oddly enough, despite the fact that I have visited over 40 countries so far [mainly thanks to my job], I have not been to several of the places on this cruise even though they are on my doorstep!
As you say, we could always take a mini break to Berlin if we fancied it later.
I suppose I`d better check on the cost of the trip to the shipyard before making a hasty decision though!

Agreed. I read "chartered plane" and started seeing lots of these $$$$$$$$

But then again, you could be surprised! It might be quite reasonable!

I would do it Terry . It is a once in a lifetime opportunity to see the Dream being constructed .

The cost for this tour is $2,900 per person [even children!]

Brandenburg Gate, here we come!

Whoa.

I was afraid of that. Disney doesn't sell their "secrets" on the cheap, now do they?

:WOW: Just wow.

Yep, it`s a shame about that. :sorry:
The tour is limited to only 7 folks and most of the cost is down to the private plane I reckon.
Mind you there`s always the chance that I may win the lottery before our cruise. :fingers:

You know, I just thought of one more potential negative about this.

The weather.

Since you're only in Warnemunde for a day, if the weather's bad either there or in Papenburg, it would cancel out a very expensive shore excursion. Granted you'd probably get a refund but it could still ruin a perfectly good shore excursion.

Of course, once you get there, the weather will probably be delightful. Just cause I mentioned it! :mental:

Tom (:macwave:... IFR conditions for fun and profit!)

ummm...

well... if you ever go back to Germany, chances are, the Brandenburg Gate and pieces of the Berlin Wall will still be there.... whereas the Dream wont be there later on...

so.. I would go see the ship

Berlin is actually available on that day stop? It is quite a way from Warnemünde to Berlin. (about 240KM) Although that is only about 85 miles.

Depending upon which shore excursion you take, they take you there either by bus or train John.

Slowhand, that is a huge price for an excursion, but I'm going to say this. You live once. You've done wonderful things for the people in your life, and are a very dear and kind friend who is generous to all.

If anyone deserves that excursion, you do. Would that I had the means to see that it happened for you.

Think about it, ok?

That`s a great thought DF...thanks for thinking of me.
Actually, I`ve just read that even though the guests on this tour will have to pay an arm and a leg, they are not allowed to take any photographs from inside the Disney Dream!
That`s it then...I ain`t going on it!

Well that's not very nice is it! Now you REALLY need to go so that you can capture the images in your mind and put words to paper to describe them. :D :D

Now steady on Tom. I still have to refer to the handbook for my Nikon D70!
I can see the headlines now "Spy caught while figuring out how to use his camera".
