They do very different things
If it was a case of either I'd get the macbook
But I am getting a pad for surfing on the sofa or, as you brilliantly suggested , showing photos.
I am hoping there will be a way to link to an external hard drive wirelessly with it at some point

The photoviewing thing was shown off at the keynote  they've even designed a built in photo app to do it which looks great. So yeah, that one's a given.
Still no news at all on UK anything though :( There was a rumour that the US folks would be able to order it last Thur/Fri with a delivery date of end of March but turned out to be wrong.
The exchange rate is so rubbish right now, I could see them starting at £399 over here
Either way I'll be queueing up at the Trafford centre to get my hands on one :D

Chris,
I think that's going to be available out of the box. Since the iPad will run iPhone apps, you could probably use something like this:
Air Sharing (http://avatron.com/apps/air-sharing/)
There's plenty of others that provide the same functionality.
Tom (:macwave:... there's an app for that!)

it will have an airplane mode won't it?

They'll be sure to include a way to turn off the 3g/wifi radios for sure, not that they need to since the moaning about interference is just rubbish :) but still I'm sure it'll be there

any thoughts about holding this thing to use it? it's going to be a little to big to balance while you type? and if it's flat on your lap you're not going to be able to see very well. I was thinking of using it as a family web surfer that instantly switches on. will i be able to print from it?
i guess it's what will i use it for? i think i'm talking myself round to a macbook instead

Watch the keynote speech on apple.com Brit I did yesterday and it has made me want one more. Kind of ironic he chose the NY Times to demonstate the web and there were obvious holes where the flash plugs were.
I am kinda thinking amazing though the photos look will 16 gb be enough

I'd say go with the macbook  You'll be able to use it for more. Plus when you've got it you have a nice OSX machine and then you will have time to save/decide whether to go with the iPad when it's 2nd version/revision is out
I'm betting the 2nd one will have a camera and the 'base' model will probably have a bigger memory too

It really does depend what you'll use it for, you're absolutely right.
I do think that everyone will be surprised how much more can be done on the ipad than is currently expected though. For some things, a touch interface is simply a lot more intuitive and immediate than moving a mouse pointer around.
As a family web surfer, place to show off photos, write some email and so on, it will be superb and unmatched IMHO.
I know we've said all this before, but if you look at the Apple development kit for this thing, there's a new version coming out almost every week with more things in it. I really believe that they're improving the OS to be a "full" computer os but very carefully made to be spot on for mobile devices. (This is why windows mobile looks so very very clunky and old next to an iphone)

mmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Do you reckon the ipad functions will be able to be upgraded via normal iphone updates?

you'll have to explain what you mean there?
I mean I'm sure the upgrade process will be similar to the current iphone yep if that's what you meant?

yeah that's what i meant, was watching the key note speech whilst typing, sometimes even us women have problems multi tasking!
Keith
28-02-2010, 01:16 PM
sure, well I wouldn't worry about updates :) it'll be easy and fine. The way they're going with the OS I'd expect them to be working hard on upgrades for it especially in the first year or so.

A search today of some of the probable retailers said it was likley it would be about £375 for the basic 16gb wifi but it may be as late as JUNE before it hits UK shores!

such pessimism!
Keith

There was concern about a production hold up but the manufacturers have largely let it slip that the run is just fine.
We'll have to wait and see, I'm still hoping for march 26th (375 sounds about right though if not a tad optimistic)

there's wifi there and I have my iphone and laptop, of COURSE I can answer him :taunt:
Yep I am. I'm thinking of keeping it low key for the first revision. See what my usage pattern is like and HOPEFULLY I'll have chosen correctly anyway, if I DO desperately need the 3g I'll sell the wifi only to someone in the office I'm sure :)
By the time rev2 comes with the camera and whatever else, I'll be willing to invest a bit more knowing what features are important/vital to me
