I've had my iPod touch in A speaker dock for a while. Now it's away from the do.ck I can only get sound through the headphones. Where has my sound gone?

Seriously, is yours a 1st generation Touch? If so, I think you need to access the "Settings" app from your home screen. On that, choose "Sounds" and see where your sounds are set to come from; headphones, internal speaker, or both. Set as desired.

The other possibility would be (depending on iPod Touch generation) is that you've paired bluetooth headphones with it. If that's the case, you'd need to tap on the Bluetooth Audio icon on the playback controls and choose your speaker as the audio output device.

It's a 3rd gen I think - 8gb one.

I went to Settings - General - Sounds but nothing there seemed to fit the criteria. I'm at a loss. :unsure:

Do you have Bluetooth enabled? A Bluetooth headset perhaps?

Bluetooth is off but I don't have bluetooth headset.

Not necessarily. It's just that if you're using a Bluetooth headset with it, the audio playback controls will have a little Bluetooth icon that allows you to specify what the audio output device will be.

Adrian fixed it. Apparently I was always putting it on standby and never switching it off. He switched it off and back on and now I have sound. :sigh:

Now, how do I play this Angry Birds thing I just downloaded.

Dawn.... just a warning. DON'T PLAY ANGRY BIRDS! Your whole day will be filled with worry and angst about not having all 3 stars on one of the levels!
