If you're asking about Kindle books Brit, here's the link to the Amazon Kindle store (http://www.amazon.com/Kindle-Books/b/ref=sa_menu_kbo0?ie=UTF8&node=1286228011&pf_rd_p=328655101&pf_rd_s=left-nav-1&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_i=507846&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=0WKV28YFVA5QMTVMCMAM). Price wise, they're all over the place. From free to many $$$$$$. The Kindle reader app is free also in the Apple iTunes app store.

If you're asking about the apps for the iPad, they too are all over the place price wise. Many are free but some of them go up to a fair amount of money. The most expensive one I've seen so far is $49.95.

Tom (:macwave:... likes books and apps!)

As long as you only have one iTunes account and you give each iPad a unique name, you should be able to sync both of them to the same iTunes account. Then everybody ends up with the same programs.

At least that's how it's purported to work!

You know, it's just one of those devices, I like it more every day I use it and heck I had pretty high hopes before hand!

I use it for my daily diary, all my email, task lists, to do lists, booking movies, playing the odd game (much more than I've played any other games because its so much more enjoyable)

There's just something liberating about having it sitting there, instantly turns on and there's your internet, web pages blah blah

I absolutely love it but I find myself struggling nowadays to remember the good bits because I can't remember what it was like without it!! Honestly it's like someone saying "whats good about having a fridge in the kitchen?" I'm so used to it I'd have to really think about what life would be like without it

In my case, I work in technology but from home so I spend most of my days in my office with my various computers surrounding me. :mental:

Not sure what you mean by leaflets Jeff. If you mean flyer's, here's an example of what it can do. This is actually the iPad Pages template for a Flyer. All I did was email it to myself in PDF format but then I had to take a picture of it because it was too big to upload as a PDF.

Of course it holds sentimental value! It represents something from your dear Grandfather. However, if you did sell it and used the money to replace it with an upgrade (like the iPad) that would be from him too. It would be like his gift to you allowing you to move to the next sophisticated generation of equipment. It is still from him, because had he not provided you the means to buy the first iMac, then you'd not have the means to have the iPad.

Actually, I think it could be viewed as a fitting tribute to your Grandfather (in the sense of a continuum). :hug2:

Skywatcher
16-06-2010, 07:28 AM
I bought a hifi with the money my grandad left me and I kept it for years even though you could no longer get stylus' for it ( google if you are young ) and one of the tape decks stopped working as I copied about a thousand albums ( and they worry about the intenet  ) but I had to let it go eventually

Now if I get any money like that we buy something a bit more timeless , like a painting or an ornament or go on a day out somewhere we wouldn't do normally.

Josh mate you can't keep the iMac forever, the worst thng to do would be for it to reside in your loft for the rest of your life - let someone be anointed to the world of mac whilst you take the essence of your grandfathers gift and pass it on to the next generation

continuing to get pleasure and excitement from his gift to you would, I'm sure, make him very happy

josh.p.
16-06-2010, 09:21 AM

Anyone got any idea of a good price for it?

Josh,

You might check these guys (http://sellers.macofalltrades.com/sellers.asp). They specialize in used Macs and have been in business for a long time. Granted, you wouldn't sell through them. But it should give you an idea of pricing. Interestingly enough, on their "buy" page, they don't have any iMacs. Perhaps these are retaining their value better.

Tom (:macwave:... a difficult decision!)

Star walk is a great app and I wish I'd had it when I was starting out for 3 quid it's a bargain. The compass won't work for me. But I love how it shows where the nebulas and galaxies are so you can see where they are, you can put it into night vision mode so it doesn't mess up your dark adaption. It should help you see the nit sky so much better.

Go for it

There are some going on eBay that are the old white polycarb ones rather than the alu one for around 530. It doesn't have as good spec as mine either.

It's a lovely Mac to be sure you could get a very good price for that, are you including any iworks for that as well? It all adds up

Well I thik so but then I'm an astronomy geek in the max and I think its a fantastic way to learn the sky and learn where everything is in space - couple it with a small telescope or a pair of pinoculars and you could have a cracking evening out under the stars, it really is a mobile planitarium in a very useable format

I am wondering if it would be better to use this apps via iphone4 so I can use 3G unless that will eat up my data tariff?

There is a free Lite version that I use on my iphone that is nearly as good

Also planets free shows you not only where the planets are but also the constellations and is also free on iphone and ipad - try those first

I am very behind the times on skype and have never indulged as yet - not even really sure what it is (how sad is that)

Can you use Skype on an iPad with Wifi?

The iPhone version will run on the iPad. Just like on your computer, Skype calls to landlines cost money (although it isn't much), WiFi calls to other Skype users are free. Calls via the 3GS network will eat at your data allowance and after the end of the year, Skype is going to have a "small charge" to make them.

Tom (:macwave:... if it's free, it's for me!)

I'm here if you need anything.

If you have. Never seen a nebula before go for the ring in lyra over the summer. Ghostly little smoke ring but just awesome. Visibile in a small scope
