Loved my 3 series I would go for a bigger engine as i thinkthe 1.8 is a shade underpowered but that may just be my opinion - the auto gearbox is very good on the BMWs

Next question.... is it a good car to exchange for a smart car 2004?

 they are VERY different cars mate - I think you'll notice a big jump in quality and driving experience , but also in fuel and servicing costs

mmhh not sure if it is a 'good' different if you get my drift...

I am not sure if this is a type of car that is okay to go backward from 2004. I know in principle you shouldnt but....

Oh it will be a much nicerf car to drive than the smart and they tend to be well looked after - have a test drive - what have you got to lose?

if i were getting a bmw, id get the 320 or the 323 sometimes the bigger engine is actually more fuel efficient as its not working as hard. in that 3 series the back does not have that much legroom so dont expect any passengers to be comfy. also what chris said they cost a fortune to service

I don't think the passengers being comfy will be a problem if you've gone from a 2-seat smart car though?

You can get a 2nd hand mini for around 4k now-a-days.
