Hi,

So far I have hand picked three possible cars to exchange my Smart car....

1. Golf (02 plate 1.6 SE)

2. Ford Focus 1.6 Ghia or 1.6 Zetec (03)

3. Nissan Almeria 1.6 SE (03)

Any suggestions?....

well I still preferred the bmw idea :taunt: but out of those...

golf overrated and will command a better price than it should because of the name. It'll work though.

nissan will be reliable but boring

The ford will probably be the bargain. The focus is "just a car" in every sense. They know what theyre doing and in every area the focus just works. It's kinda plasticcy but you can tell it's the result of many years making cars so although nothing about it will likely WOW you, nothing about it should annoy you either.

So the golf will likely be the emotional choice, the focus the thoughtful choice.

I disagree that the focus is 'just a car' :) I think they are superbly made and have excellent hadling and a suberb chassis for the price, I think Golfs are overated, but itsa very subjective thing.

Personally I would definitely test drive them all and go with what makes you happy

Well I kinda meant "just a car" in a bit of a positive way. I'm an admitted car snob but if I had a xK to buy a car and 5 minutes to decide, I'd choose a focus. Although none of the ones I've tried have wowed me with handling and so on, they have all been utterly robust and did exactly as I'd expect from them. I truly regard a focus as an utterly safe bet

totally!

Ach its only cos my Dad worked for Fords so I had a long succession of them, I was genuinely impressed with the handling and grip though compared to anything else in its class

We've had loads of fords, i've got a cmax at the moment but had that shape focus before, I feel very safe in them , I was shunted in it into another car and it seemed to bounce! My next car will either be a focus or fiesta, boring maybe but very practical.

DW has had a line of fiestas. I've offered other cars but she won't have any of it, she wants her fiesta.

We were moving house once and I, in mega stressed mode, reversed a rather expensive bmw into her rather cheaper fiesta and as you say, the fiesta seemed to compress and expand like a cartoon car  the bmw immediately had hundreds of pounds worth of damage (which is just utterly par for the course)

the 3 door astra has nice sporty lines, looks like its had its roof chopped, i like those.
the golf has a superb engine, now if it were a GTi then they dont loosen up til 70k but im not so sure on the inside never seen inside a golf.
what about a 2dr sports ragtop toyota mr2?

Another thing in favour of the Focus is that the suspension was designed by Lotus.

So far it between Golf and the Focus.

Honest John gives focus better review and all three fords are on the top ten

I used to own a ford focus and I loved it. Still miss it though.

However, Golf does have the edge me think......

Hi,

Car shopping didnt go well :nono:

Firstly the garage who had the Golf was not very flexible the price and offered 2k for my smart car and expected me to fork out extra 2k for Golf even when I offered to pay in cash!!!!

The car feels 'a bit' old inside...

The garage with the Ford Focus, the car itself is not arriving until Tuesday at least! On the garage's website it has the information as if they got the car(!) :nono:

However, I found a Peugeot 206 (1.4 LX) seen it and it feels good but nothing 'wow' about it however, I am quite 'fussy' and I thought Smart car has the 'wow' factor but got bored after couple of weeks

Mega Sigh!

Wait for the focus  what model is it?

Deafjeff
29-05-2010, 04:27 PM
Ghia 1.6 Black auto 2003 but....car tax will be 245(!)

Which is the same for Black Golf 1.6 SE 2002

:jawdrop:

206 is 155 which is almost 100 cheaper.....

Skywatcher
29-05-2010, 04:37 PM
Wait and drive it mate, in the end you have to live with the car. If you really didn't like the 206 you will find yourself looking for a new motor soon enough and I'm pretty sure you'll lose that 100 quid pretty quick then

Deafjeff
29-05-2010, 04:40 PM
righto...

206
2003 (52 reg) 24K miles, 1.4 Petrol 40.9 mpg tax 155

Ford Focus

2003 (03 reg) 84k miles, 1.6 35.3 mpg tax 135

Golf

2002 (02 reg) 1.6 Petrol 64K 33.6 mpg Tax 145

On paper 206 offer better option... I owned similar ford focus so not sure if I want to 'go back' even if I loved the car.

Golf still have the edge but it looks 'old' inside and focus is fairly 'timeless'

decision decision!

Will go to another garage tomorrow where they sells the black golf....

At the end of the day 100 will quickly be gone if you have to re-sell the car a few months down the line 'cos you're tired of it  At the end of the day when you're spending this much money on something it has to be something you think is right

garages always get info on cars that will be arriving soon, they are from part exchanges etc and the customer is waiting to take delivery of their new car. the sooner they can get the car advertised and sold even before it arrives is great business for them as it will not take up forecourt space as it will be gone within hours of them getting it...hope that makes sense jeff

Got new Car!!!!

It Ford Fiesta (very basic model - no electric window or remote lock!)

But I love it it black 2003 reg and so nice to have ford car again!

The garage offered me 2500 for my Smart Car which I could not turn down and the top up for the Fiesta was not steep so decided to go for it!

Nowadays they refer to it as an Indian car!
