Ask them if they can save them for people cos I'll definitely want one in two weeks time and ask them what stock levels are like

I've pretty much discounted the 3g one, especially with that mifi thing and also if I buy in the states, it'll probably come with an att sim. It's not a huge deal, I'm sure I could swap it out for a uk carrier but hmmm. No tbh, I think wifi.
in terms of size, I doubt I'd ever really use the 16GB. I wont put music on it, MAINLY it would be a web browser+email device.
16 would work, 32 probably more than enough.
Skywatcher
26-04-2010, 07:36 PM
Ah but at 64gb you could use it to back up your holiday pics
And although I agree about music being pointless I am thinking more and more about using it as a mobile video player for holidays and airports
Just a thoughtlet
( little by little we make him decide  )

All true and of course with 64GB you'd rarely wish you'd bought the 16, the other way round however could be a very real concern.
Thing is, version 2 will be out won't it. If it takes a year I'd be surprised. So whether to REALLLLY spend a lot now hmmmm.
Mind you apparently stocks of the larger ones are a lot easier to find than the smaller, so my hand may be forced anyway.

64....
64....
64....
(Insert subliminal advertising here)
With the 64 gig one, I've got buckets of videos on there. iTunes U mostly. iPhone Development ones mostly. Except for the advanced ones which seem to be having an issue. Naturally, the OpenGL ES ones are the ones I want most.
But I digress.
Having the space to get them on there is divine. If I even had the 32, I'd have to be making some hard choices. As it is, I've got enough space.
Barely. :mental:

see I was going to say, I don't really see I'd need it for movies very much. I dont really see myself watching movies when out and about and the car has 7 dvd slots + a large screen if I wanted to.
HOWEVER of course, Tom mentioning the apple programming videos. hmmm yes, I can see myself carrying that kind of thing around. Hmmmmm

Seriously, it's quite good for that. Of course it annoys my DW because I'll be sitting there with my headphones on and she'll be chatting away and finally gets annoyed because I don't appear to be listening to her.
C'est la vie!

I haven't tried it either. My full length movies are the digital versions already. From what I understand, you first have to rip it with something like Handbrake (http://handbrake.fr/). From the homepage of the software it's "Not Dead, Just Pining for the Fjords". :mental:
Seriously!
Gotta be great software!

right keith a bit of info for you :)
you will need to reserve one online as they have people waiting for the deliveries to be released. we were there at 11.15 yesterday and got a great guy serve us they are struggling with stock levels and at 11.15 the store was full of people waiting to see if they could get one. we reserved one with our itunes account and came away as they didnt even know if there was any on the delivery and we had stuff to do.
when we got the email to say there was one for us and went to pick it up the assistant could not believe we had just reserved it today as its taking alot of time to fill orders and he showed us the list on the computer when he was looking for my order.
i would really try to reserve one as it does seem there struggling with stock levels :)

I just called the Apple store at the Florida Mall to ask about this. For the straight Wi-Fi model, they said the only way you can reserve one is to come into the store and reserve it there. Like daveann did. They'll send you an email when it's available and you then have 24 hours to come pick it up. The 3G ones are first come, first served.
I explained that you were in the UK and coming over on vacation so how could you possible come in to reserve it before you got here. He explained that that was the only way to do it. :mental:
I think I spoke to the only moron in all of the Apple stores. At least he was the only one I've ever gotten who acted that stupid!
Tom (:macwave:... we'll figure this out!)

 awww thanks Tom seriously I appreciate that  At least we know properly where we stand.
The reply the guy at work got when he phoned was "absolutely no preordering of any kind now that the initial web preordering process has gone"
The reply you got makes more sense even though it still sucks

Keep in mind that there are 3 Apple stores in the greater Orlando area (Florida Mall, Millennia, and Altamonte Springs) plus 2 others (Brandon and Tampa) within a bit of a drive (1 1/2 hours one way).
So, if one's out, perhaps the others can accommodate you!

More seriously, if it were £50 cheaper or something then yeah I probably would wait but all my history with Apple says that it'll be between £25 and £75 more expensive in the UK

Considering you thought of going into marketing once, you're totally misreading the ad! They said it's a "magical" product at an "UNBELIEVABLE" price! as in "OMG I cant BELIEVE It's so expensive over here!!!!!!!" ;-)

I am not sure how to work this out  So could you give me a rough example?
Maths never have been my strongest subject ( I tries to explain to someone another day that 120 seconds is too long, all I wanted is two minutes!) :embarassed2:
Keith
01-05-2010, 01:30 PM
Well it's only guesswork and heck it could be cheaper for all I know!
...but basically if you look at a unit over there
$499 + TAX (7%) = $534 ÷ (exchange rate) say 1.5 = £356
Now many people are hoping that the ipad in the UK will be £399 (which I think is a bit optimistic but POSSIBLE!!!) in which case depending on the exchange rate, it'd be about £45 more expensive in real terms over here than in the US.
Of course, they could make it £350 which would be mega nice

If youre looking for one that works across MSN/ICQ/YAhoo etc, try trillian, definitely the best I found

There is a fantastic app called 'whatsapp' that is free for blackberrys and about 99p for iPhones. You can send instant messages between you both much like MSN but it works by address book contacts and is much more integrated
