Well I think mr catrancher gave some good advice. He said basically that once you store music/videos etc on it, you'll be glad of the extra space and too much space won't hurt you but having too little may really annoy you and what's the fix? sell it lose money and have to buy a larger one?

ultimately Jeff you are spot on - much as I want 64gb if its crazy money I won't you can get a 64gb wi-fi through a legit looking link on amazon for £699 at the moment, which isn't as terrible as I've seen elsewhere

Tom, did you buy them? what are they like if so? (apologies if you've already told us, I have the memory of an amnesiac goldfish)
Why yes. I did buy them. All three as a matter of fact. And even if you're living in a fish bowl, they're absolutely brilliant!
As far as I'm concerned, they're more than worth the price I paid for them ($9.99 each). Quite frankly, how they (Apple) can squeeze so much functionality into an app they're only charging $9.99 for is a point of amazement for me. Adobe should take a lesson from Apple although that's not likely to happen.
Oh, and BTW, the "Ping" application that I bought for the iPad. After chatting with Josh this morning, I've had a bit of an epiphany about it. I really believe it would be more useful on the iPhone rather than the iPad. If someone wants to chat with me and I'm out and about, I'm far more likely to have my iPhone with me rather than my iPad. Additionally, with my iPhone, I've got the cellular network to backup my connection which even if I had my iPad out with me, unless there's a Wi-Fi hotspot available, I wouldn't have network connectivity.
Of course, if my objective is to NOT be available, then I suppose it makes sense to have it on the iPad! :laugh2:

I have defintely justified the upgrade to 64gb now having revisited how much it would be to get a portable storage device to back up photos whilst on hols.
I take it that if I put an empty sd card in the slot I could upload photos from the ipad to it ??
Also Tom/Ann is there the facility to upload to flickr/facebook/email for photos like there is with iphoto?

I take it that if I put an empty sd card in the slot I could upload photos from the ipad to it ??
Nope. At least as I understand it. You can email photos, sync with iTunes and your Mac. But for right now, that's about it I think.
Also Tom/Ann is there the facility to upload to flickr/facebook/email for photos like there is with iphoto?
Doesn't appear to be right now. There's apps available that let you view Flickr photos although why you'd need an app for that I don't know since you can always use Safari to do it.
However, I strongly suspect this will change with the advent of iPhone OS 4. There's functionality in it that will allow developers much better access to photos on the iPad and will no doubt open up the capabilities for sharing photos from your iPad.
BTW - here's a pretty good review of the iPad Camera Connection Kit (http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/reviews/entry/apple-ipad-camera-connection-kit/).
Tom (:macwave:... still gotta order this thing!)
Skywatcher
03-05-2010, 02:01 PM
hmm - so it would be no good as a backup the  theres no point unless I can get them back off - 20gb worth of pics/vids would not email - and as far as i have been able to establish with my mobile devices when you sync the mobile device only uploads stuff to it from itunes not the other way around - I may be very very wrong in this regard though
Skywatcher
03-05-2010, 02:02 PM
I take it they don't allow this functionality with the sd card reader as it would effectively be boosting the memory of the ipad
Skywatcher
03-05-2010, 02:07 PM
hmm ok sorted thanks to that - looks like when I plug in the usb dock I can upload then to iphoto
one last question - is there any processing of images on ipad at all?

Don't think so. When you upload your photos to the iPad, then connect it to your Mac to sync, it actually uploads them using iPhoto on the Mac. Not iTunes. At least that's what it said in the review I linked to. Soooo... I would think use the iPad as a "storage" device while you're on vacation and then when you get home, connect to your Mac and it uploads the images to iPhoto.
At least that's what it looks like to me.

On May 10th, you both should be able to pre-order from the online Apple store in the UK. If it's anything like it is here in the states, you'd pre-order it. Then, on the day it's actually made available in the UK and all the poor lemmings (like me) are lined up at the Apple stores, you'll get a knock on your door and the delivery of your new iPad. :mental:

Couple of questions...
1. If I prebook ipad would I need to pay upfront or pay at the store?

3. Is it possible to print stuff off from ipad as I was thinking from email and pages perspective.

1. If I prebook ipad would I need to pay upfront or pay at the store?
I'm not sure on this one. Check the Apple web site. Since I stood in line to get mine, the prebook stuff didn't apply.
2. How many photos (very roughly) would 16gb ipad hold?
I have no way of knowing the answer to this one. Depends on so many variables. Are you shooting JPEG or RAW? If JPEG, what size and quality?
We can make a very rough guess based on approximate photo sizes. For instance, I've got a RAW photo I took with my Nikon DSLR. It's 5.2 MB in size and 3024 x 1998 pixels in dimension. If we assume that's a good average size, and we assume that 80% of the space on the iPad is available for pictures, then it follows that you'd be able to squeeze in something like 2700 to 2800 pictures.
Keep in mind however that all this is a SWAG (scientific wild a55 guess) and contains no bearing on reality.
3. Is it possible to print stuff off from ipad as I was thinking from email and pages perspective.
There are apps now that make that functionality available to you and more options are coming all the time.

Couple of questions...
2. How many photos (very roughly) would 16gb ipad hold?
found this, not sure if its true but gives you an idea jeff
That depends on the photos. Several factors determine the size of a photo, including the type of file, size, composition and resolution.
Photos typically run anywhere from 1 to 5 megabytes but can be much smaller and much larger.
If your photos average 4 megabytes you could get about 4000 pictures on a 16GB iPad.
also found this that made me
the real question is why in the hell would you want an iPad... i mean seriously a large not much more powerful ipod touch thats not easy to carry and cost more than a netbook that can do more??
disneymom
04-05-2010, 01:02 PM
DS has one and it's nothing like my netbook. The iPad is easier to use and more comfortable for relaxing with and looking at web pages. Pictures look wonderful on it.
It also turns on and off instantly unlike my netbook so if youre on a bus or something you can use it and not miss your stop waiting for the netbook to turn off
It's way nicer than my netbook to use in every way and I want one

That's excellent! Thank you.
I firmly believe everyone should own up to their responsibilities. You've done an admirable job of it!
I, for one, forgive you.

It's been a life saver for me  We had to read wuthering heights over easter for college, I seemed to be the only person who actually read it so we now have to read it as a class like 5 year olds. Now I sit with angry birds behind the book and play that  :rotfl:
