total rip off :( they've waited until just after the election so the pound is at its VERY lowest so they can claim it's not them it's the exchange rate.

Sigh.

Need some advice...

I am a part timer free lance and pay my own tax as well as working full time.

I am claiming my lap top via tax at the moment..... would I be able to claim ipad as well?

If so how can I 'justify' ipad if I have lap top...

Im still vaguely pondering it :/ some of our customers are using them and they say it works very well and of course adds cell assisted GPS. (they've all bought from the states and just cut a regular sized sim card down to micro sized to make it work)

Skywatcher

evidently not and I'm pretty sure they were clear on that point during the launch, basically saying that there wont be lockins etc. and you can buy service from whoever offers the best data deal

yep one of our customers sent me extensive photos of him hacking a normal sim card to bits with scissors  doesnt look hard tbh

I wonder if O2 will be doing any sort of tie in deal with those who have iPhones

the RUMOURS are saying that most of the major providers will be offering free 3g ipads if you buy a certain tariff :/ I've not heard of any iphone tie in yet though

I agree I didn't get it at first now I'm pretty sure , having spoken to people who own one that I will have it in my hand all day

Anyone who owns an iPhone or an iTouch will tell you how much they use it - instant web access with perfect portablility instant email hundreds of thousands of apps - add in excellent photo sharing, wordprocessing, films, iBooks ( I do think its the future) - I do believe it is the first step on the road to an incredible advance in the digital age and it is not a 'gimick' or just a 'big itouch' at all

I want to have it delivered, is that not possible? was just thinking if they don't charge till say shipping which is after the 20th i don't have to pay till June on my CC which was when i was going to get it for my birthday.

I suppose i could drive to Meadowhall after work.....................

now do i get the 16 or 32GB? def decided only to get wifi.

Oh and what time will you be able to reserve from?

Julie .............. :apple: not getting excited one little bit!

catrancher
09-05-2010, 01:14 PM
The way it worked over here was that you pre-ordered from the web site. Then you could choose to either:

pick it up in store on the day of release,
- or -
have it delivered.

Of course, pre-ordering means you didn't have to get up at 4 AM to get to the store and take your chances in line with all the other fanatics.

But where's the fun in that? :mental:

Of course, since we're in different countries, your mileage may vary! :laugh2:

Tom (:macwave:... just one of the crowd!)

Britchick
09-05-2010, 01:28 PM

Keith

So.... How nailed on is it that it will be delivered on the Friday ? Suppose I really should get it sent to work.

Again, in my experience, in the US they nail the release day even if it's a saturday. On rare occasions for software, it's arrived the day before!

In the UK it's been a lot worse. Generally stuff has tended to arrive either on the day as long as it's a weekday or a couple of days later with no real indication of when. (the 27" imac was far more trackable than most stuff IVe ordered)

So whilst there's hope for sure, unless they claim very clearly "you'll receive on may 28th" I would plan for a three/four day window.

Britchick
09-05-2010, 10:56 PM

£2 a day seems steep to me - I expect that if theyare monitoring its use then at some point during most days you might get wifi drop out and the 3g would kick in - if that happened on 20 days a month it would cost £40

I am dissapointed there wasn't an option to tie in if you have an o2 iphone contract - if it was me I would have said to people - free iphone 3g if you extend your iphone monthly payment plan - then I might have thought about it

ah!

Very valid point, I would have thought you go onto the 3G and 'buy' some airtime.....but didnt think they would automatic charge us... mmmhh

Maybe there is an option where you tell the ipad not to connect 3g if you dropped out of wifi?

It doesn't come with a dock.

Just a cable with the 30 pin plug on one end and a USB connector on the other. It appears to be the same cable as for the iPhone. At least they're interchangeable.

I dont think so

In the box

* iPad
* Dock Connector to USB Cable
* 10W USB Power Adapter
* Documentation

So ipad, cable from the connector on the bottom (which they call the dock connector) to USB for charging/connecting to the computer AND connecting to the power adapter, Power adapter itself, documentation (which as tom says is like a single sheet of paper or something)

You'd leave it connected to a computer so it makes it nice and easy to come back to your desk, dump your ipad on the dock and you'd immediately have syncing, audio etc without having to connect/reconnect/disconnect cables all the time

I have ordered case from apple, as got four cats and a dog so me think it is wise to get case!

Will pick up the camera connector thingy in Cardiff on 29th be interesting to see if there is any ipad left on 29th!

Hopefully will be in the position to have 'celebration' coffee in town after my 'treatment' on 28th

I think if REALLY REALLY undecided, the 3g one makes most sense. It's another 100 but you won't be constantly wishing you had it. However, I wouldn't sacrifice lots of space for a "maybe I'd use 3g". So I wouldnt for example go from a 64GB wifi down to a 16GB 3g.

All in all, for me, I think the 32GB 3g is most sensible but having said that, I suspect the 3g would get such occasional use that if I have any trouble getting the 3g, I'll "make do LOL" with either a 32GB or 64GB wifi

You've done the right thing

Whether it was from Apple, Microsoft or whoever, I'd be saying the same thing, this is the start of a new era in how people use computers

It's the start of the move away from large desktops for most tasks, to more personal devices. It's a move away from the mouse towards direct touch input which lets face it, makes a heck of a lot more sense! Apple are at the forefront of moving away from folders and files to Application centric use.. in other words, you dont go through millions of folders to find things, your apps simply know which files it can use and shows them to you.

It's also important for the largest change in computing which is the move away from local storage in desktops to storage and applications in the cloud, on the internet  When all your apps and data are out there, automatically upgraded as and when, automatically backed up for you, you don't need huge desktops and huge hard disks that die and lose everything. Nope, all you need is an ipad (or successors) and a connection.

It's going to take a bit of imagination and we need a TON of new apps, but we're seeing a new era here

you are indeed sir :worship:

From a computer science perspective, the thin v thick eras go in cycles. You can see it with the mainframe and thin clients, then PCs and now back to thin with the web.

The NHS should always have been thin client as you quite rightly said!

However thin client has never really been able to reach out to homes and mobile devices in the past. With the global network that is the Internet, that's now possible and we should all be able to walk around with the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy :)

Laptops are too large, netbooks too clunky, phones too small.

Yep, congratulations to all you iPad visionaries, you're leading the way

Having not seen iBooks are the titles avaliable new ones and how do they compare price wise?

Looked this morning. The NY Times bestseller list is there for example. Prices on it range from $9.99 to $17.99 with most of the titles falling into the $9.99 to $12.99 range.

Older, previously published stuff isn't as prolific. The Hitchiker's Guide for example! It's getting better but it's not quite there yet. :sigh:

Only thing I don't really like about digital books is that if I buy a digital book, the only way my DW can read it is if I let her use my iPad. Sharing within the family kind of thing. With a real, bound book, I can give it to her when I'm done. If they could fix this kind of thing, digital would be outstanding.

Unless of course, you're a true bibliophile and the collections the thing for you.

Ah email :) if only we knew someone who owned an Email company :wiggle:

The very short answer to avoid boring anyone , if you use IMAP or Exchange email or Gmail or mobileme then any email you read will stay safely on your server and so you can download it elsewhere as well

There's a lot lot lot more I'd like to say but I have a bias and some self interest so I'll just smile and answer direct questions

Thick thick thick question - never set up my iPhone for e-mail as I was concerend about getting emails I needed to print onto a device I couldn't print off - is that a daft thought

If I understand what you're saying, it's a bit of a complicated thought. :mental:

Keith can probably explain this better but I'll give it a shot. He can chime in later after I've completely confused the issue. Also, keep in mind, this is what I do. Your mileage may vary.

This is going to be a bit long winded so be patient!

I use my Mac as my primary email machine. If I want to print messages, I do it from my Mac. Having said that, I still want to be able to read my messages on my iPhone or my iPad and either keep them or delete them if I really don't like the sender. :laugh2:

Now, there are typically two type of email accounts. They're called either POP or IMAP. Most everybody has a POP account. For years, that's what ISP's gave you. IMAP is newer and fundamentally different.

With POP accounts (BTW, that stands for Post Office Protocol), it's a download and delete type of thing. This is a simplification but that's it in a nutshell. Your machine (Mac, iPhone, iPad, etc), contacts the server, logs in, gets your email messages and downloads them to your device, then deletes the messages from the server. This saves the ISP buckets full of disk space (and money) since they don't have to keep your messages around.

However, this also creates a problem for you. If you download your messages to your Mac (or whatever), how can you read them on your iPad or iPhone? The simple answer is that with a POP account, you can't.

What to do?

IMAP to the rescue.

With an IMAP email account, your messages stay on the servers. You can check your IMAP email account with any device where you've got that account setup. Your Mac, your iPhone, or your iPad. Even web interfaces to IMAP accounts work the same. Since your messages stay on the servers, you see the same thing from each of your devices. If you delete a message, it delete's the message from the server which in turn, makes it appear like it's gone from all your devices. :happydance:

Now, assuming you've got a POP account or two, where do you get an IMAP account if you don't have one. Well, the Apple .Me we were talking about is one place. Google gmail is another.

What I've done with my accounts is taken my POP accounts (I have three), and set them to automatically forward to my Apple .Me account. The .Me account is IMAP. So then, I put together rules on my Mac for this account to move email messages around to various folders based on things like the "To" address, or the "From" address, or the contents of the "Subject" line. I keep the POP accounts setup in my various email programs on my devices but since they're automatically forwarding to my IMAP account, there's no harm in keeping them around. There's nothing ever in them. It got forwarded. However, it DOES give me one big advantage. By keeping those POP accounts setup in my email programs, I can use any one of my addresses as my "From" address on any emails I send. That means if one of my POP accounts is "snorklebob@whangfooie.net" and my IMAP account is "billyjoebobfungo@imap.net", I can send messages using either of those addresses. I just have to remember to change the "from" address when I compose an email.

And that's my long winded explanation. I now see Keith has replied to this in shorter form so I'll now turn it over to him to beat me mercilessly!

Tom (:macwave:... confusing the issue!)
