View Full Version : I am a victim of a scam

Well.....it started when we were in Orlando a couple of weeks ago. I received an unknown call on my cell phone. It was from a guy who sounded like he was in an Indian call center. He yelled at me and wouldn't answer any questions. He also had my social security number!! Anyway, at that time, he told me I had committed fraud with a bank and that I would be arrested. Scared me to death is what he did. I called my cell phone provider but they couldn't do anything since it was an unknown number. I even called the non emergency police number and they couldn't do anything either. The sargeant told me that people can get anything off the internet. I've received several calls since then, all with unknown or private numbers.

Today, I get a call with an actual phone number. Again it sounds like an Indian guy in a call center. He gives me a completely American sounding name though. He had the last 4 digits of my ssn, my bank name and account number! He tried to tell me that I had taken out a payday loan in Aug 2005 and that I now owed $5484.87! He said I was being charged with violating federal banking regulations, credit card fraud, etc. I NEVER took out a payday loan online! I did a google search of US National Bank and payday loans and found all kinds of interesting stuff about this being a scam.....

Can I say again that this scared the you know what right out of me???

she doesn't owe anyone anything...they are trying to scare her into giving her banking info so they can drain her account...really happy she's too darn quick for that!

OMG! I'm so pleased that you didn't give out any further details to them .... I can imagine the initial shock of being told you would be arrested....imagine how many people have fallen for it!!!!

Johnie
21-07-2008, 04:08 PM
I know! I bet it works enough of the time for them to keep doing it.

As I was telling my mom earlier, if I was going to be arrested, wouldn't they just come get me? They don't usually call first.

SleepinCatz
21-07-2008, 04:14 PM
That's exactly right. They do not call first to give you a chance to run.

I just knew that this is what was going to happen :rolleyes008: So what did the bank say and did you call the main Payday loan people and tell them about it?? They'd probably like to know that someone is using their name as part of a scam

I remember when you got this call!!! I was thinking about it the other day wondering if anything ever became of it!!! OMG! Let us know what happens!

Johnie

I'm on the phone changing bank account info as well. The bank lady also advises putting a password on the account. I will be changing my cell # next. I will then be looking at whatever government agencies I can contact to complain about this.

That's horrible Johnie! I would've probably been caught by this thinking that most banks now use overseas call centers and such. But probably yelling at you and telling you you'll be arrested isn't the best scam! And if it were legit wouldn't they have a lawyer call you or something? Not some phone worker telling you the police will arrest you!

I hope everything works out and they don't do anymore harm to your id. Did they have your whole SS #?? Is that still something to worry about?

its really frightening what anyone can find out about you, way too easy to get hold of it, it seems

Glad it's being sorted Johnie!

I had my Diner's card number stolen a few years ago - I was lucky that Diner's alerted me to it - apparently the fraudsters had done it to several people.

They bought 2 pieces of artwork worth about $5000 each with my card - I contested it of course and got a new number. Diner's were really good about it.

I'm glad your bank and mobile company are sorting it out for you - what a pain! :hug2:

This has happened to Dh :rolleyes008: It really is scary and makes me so damn angry!! They actually got money out of our bank account and it took weeks to get everything settled. We contacted everyone we knew to and reported them to everyone who would listen.

They started with our debit card number and found out everything else from there. We now use cash for everything we can. I hate that people make a living by taking things from other people

Oh man! That is awful! I am so glad I did change the bank info today then. It wasn't just the fact that they had all my info, they were so nasty and ugly too!

:hug2: Johnie...what still makes me worried for you is that you said they had your social security number. Did they have the entire number or just the last 4 digits?? If they have your entire social and your personal info like address etc. They could still attempt to get credit in your name by applying for any number of cards.:(

Good for you for taking care of everything so quickly...but be sure to look into the other ways they could abuse your identity.

People need a :slap:

I would make sure you contact the 3 major credit reporting companies (Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion) and they will put a block on your credit report so no one can apply for credit cards etc.

Johnie ~ your thread made the decision for me to join . I'm worried about you , sweetie . Figment is right, the fact that they have your SS # worries me . Might be worth a call to the SS office to alert them . Did you freeze your active bank accounts and change the account #'s . Also, alert your CC companies . Good Luck .

I am going to call social security tomorrow. The first call had my entire ssn. Today they just wanted to verify the last 4 digits.

I have closed my bank accounts and changed the numbers. I can't imagine anyone is going to get any credit from my info that would make them happy.

OMG Johnie - that's scary. Any vunerable person would be taken in by that kind of call and be ripped off for all they've got.....

Well done on keeping a sensible head and sorting it out quickly - have you infomed your local police, not that they can do anything but do they make a record of this type of thing in case they catch the scammers in future?
