sorry i still dont get the using it abroad bit so
last year when i went i took my payg phone on orange and used that to send the odd text and a few phone calls ....i obviously knew it would cost a bit more so made sure i had plenty of credit on it. i also use to update my facebook status via text message.
but now i have the iphone which has my payg sim in it .....so aslong as i turn of voicemail and data roaming would i still be able to send texts and make the odd phone call........plus still update my facebook status ??? without incurring a whopping phone bill.
im assuming i wouldnt be able to send a picture via email with the data roaming turned of ????
sorry for all the questions

I did the same as you did with my iPhone Tracy, no you won't be able to send a photo email whilst roaming is off. You could save it and find a free wifi spot and then upload

You can still text facebook to update your status  but not through the iPhone facebook app.

so that must mean i had my data roaming on last year when i used my phone as i sent a picture to diane
the problem is i definately want to take it with me next year and as im payg atleast once the credit is gone its gone and no whopping bill to surprise me
so what WILL eat my credit
lets say i leave the data roaming on .......
sent a couple of texts home and updated my facebook via text
maybe sent a few pictures via mouse on the move
and made a few calls home
am i already risking a whopping bill
was thinking of topping up say 100 pounds before i go

Well as you say, you're not risking a huge bill because once the credits gone its gone!
The problem is that the iphone is SO very connected that if you're not very careful indeed, once it knows it can get to the outside world, you'll be amazed how much data it can use. I dont know how much a Megabit of data is on your plan for data roaming but you'd have to find it out.
In terms of MMS, on other phones/plans, sending MMSs from abroad had a set fee like 50p or something :/ so I used to do it too but the phones were so limited that unless you specifically went into a web browser or something, no data was used. The iphone is kinda weird in that it can have stuff in the background sitting there like checking mail or weather etc and you can be using data without knowing it.

If you call your top-up line it usually says press option 'x' to hear your tariff information.
If you turn data roaming off and then change your internet settings so that you're not connecting to the right server (for example I should connect to payandgo.02.co.uk, but on holiday I change it to payandgo.02.co.uh or something so that it doesn't connect) then whenever you want to MMS/E-mail/Facebook, turn it on and change your settings to the correct one
