Hi All,

One of my eggs is hatching early. Not sure if the hatchling will survive but as long as it's hydrated and the area is kept sterile it should be fine.

I've put the 'night vision' cam in to monitor it and you can view it at:
http://tinyurl.com/26dgb4m

It's a very slow process and it probably won't hatch out for a few days, but there is a hole in the egg and his leg occasionally wobbles out.

Here it is;

The outlook is getting better and better, it's a lot stronger than I thought it would be and I think perhaps it is just a very large baby and there was no more room. I haven't got changed or eaten today, too busy watching. There's only movement occasionally and it lasts for about a minute until you can no longer see anything. At the minute, it's left leg (from the tort's point of view) is to the right of the hole (from our point of view) and the head is just to our left of the hole. I think it must be chipping away at the inside of the egg.

Have embedded the webcam here:

Tortoise-world.com - Informative advice on keeping Mediterranean tortoises in captivity. (http://tortoise-world.com/eggcam.html)

as my Dad wasn't able to watch at work because of the dodgy google adverts that appeared.

Just gone to check and you can see a head and legs!! The angle that the camera was at was hard to see what was going on so I've re-positioned it and you can see the face :)

The webcam is fairly blurry because the incubator isn't big enough to get it far away.

She's sleeping at the minute, barely any movement except for the slight breathing motion. (And just as I said that she did a 'push up' in the egg haha)

02-08-2010, 08:29 PM
Having a rest in the egg now. Still alive and going strong. From what I can make out there is some yolk sack left to be absorbed so hopefully tonight it will go down a bit.

Are you going to get any sleep tonight or are you on midwife duty:unsure:

josh.p.
02-08-2010, 11:42 PM
I'll try and get some sleep. I only got 4 hours last night because I was so worried. There's nothing I can do to help but I was just so nervous!

looks like 2 legs and a head to me and they are wiggling which is good

josh.p.
03-08-2010, 10:52 AM
There is a head and a leg visible at the minute but there are two legs out. She is doing push ups to break the top of the egg off lol. Maybe it's a teenage mutant ninja tortoise  I think she'll be out the egg tomorrow morning. I haven't checked today, but last time I looked there was a yolk sack to be absorbed and that's why she's sitting there.

She is certainly a strong one

Oooo i see it (the black blob in the middle is its head, right!?!?).

Its such a fantastic idea Josh, great to watch them coming out of their shell.

josh.p.

Her yolk sack is definitely smaller than yesterday, about the size of a 1p, so hopefully will be absorbed before she breaks out. If not she'll have to sit in an egg cup or sterilised pop bottle lid to be sure she doesn't rupture it. No idea why she has hatched so early. This year has been an odd one for lots of breeders. Eggs taking 70+ days to hatch (usually the maximum is 64, but generally around 51-56 days), some hatching early.

I did make a guess that the weather could have effected them, they have a peniel gland which senses baromatic pressure (mainly as a trigger to hibernate) I have no idea if the eggs could sense it but it was the only theory I could come up with.

I still want two. When will they be ready for new homes?

josh.p.
03-08-2010, 02:47 PM
It depends on how much weight they put on, but I was planning on next spring. By September they will be thinking about hibernating and it can be daunting for a new owner to have a baby tort wanting to hibernate. I didn't hibernate my hatchlings last year but will see what this year's weights are like when it comes to hibernation. The 1 year olds will all hibernate.

If you are serious about wanting one of these then I would be more than happy to give you first refusal when I begin to sell them to their new homes. When I checked the yolk sack I took a pic of her;

Not sure if this gives you a better idea of scale but it's the best I can do in the incubator lol

Once hatched I'll tell you it's weight and take a picture next to a penny.

josh.p.
03-08-2010, 05:22 PM
Btw.. the masses of damp tissue in the take away tub are to up the humidity around the egg. Since it was 'premature' the main risk is that it could dry out and stop the tortoise from hatching. I've put the cam back online, had a bit of a technical fault with the laptop that the webcam is plugged into (it's windows so is to be expected <G>)

The webcam has over heated (it has been in use for 2 days now lol) so I've turned it off. Hopefully there will be a hatchling in the morning but I am still worried. A week is quite a long time to be early.

josh.p.
03-08-2010, 09:34 PM
Bad news :( The little baby didn't make it. I weighed it after it had died and it was only 8g so very very small and probably wouldn't have made it to the end of the week had it have hatched.

It's very sad but in all honesty the possibility of it surviving from the start was low. It got better and better and then died very suddenly. Hopefully the others will hatch normally and healthily.

There are still 3 others left to hatch yet. There can be quite some time between hatchlings, and since this one was so early, I don't expect these to hatch until after Saturday. I will keep you all updated and put the web cam on any that hatch.

Thanks everyone :hug2: it happens when you breed anything, it's just sad that it has happened with one of my first clutches. The other three should hatch fine.
