:gy:yeah I know...silly question...but really. When you come to the States...What substitutions do you make...or can you find stores that carry your brands from home?

Never looked for it before but will need to find Marmite this time. It's part of my breakfast routine! We never bring anything from home because we love what's on offer anyway! Apart from sliced bread..............

Marmite isn't as hard to find here, as it once was. You can find it in some Publix, and I think, even a Walmart or two.

what is Marmite?

Dawn
21-07-2008, 06:32 PM
A savoury spread mostly put on toast or in sandwiches.

One of those love it or hate it products that divides a nation. Our house is in the love it camp. :D

Ursula

Ask Tink lol... she just loved hers....... lol.... Many people put it on thickly and it only needs a fingernail size piece on the bread. Hubby hates it..... I don't think the Americans *get it* lol. Whereas we're brought up on it, full of good vitamins.

I prefer homemade when I have the stuff to do it lol.....but I grew up with sliced bread...my fav is butter bread...I don't buy it often cause i don't need to get any fluffier than I already am lol. I think I'm going to get some bread pans and get back into making my own. I don't know of any bakery that makes bread in this town....Le Madelines used to have the most wonderful loaves....sigh

Yeh... the bread is sweet, its wierd, and everyone mentions it when they come back from the US!! LOL

We mostly had drinks; Grape Juice, Root Beer, Diet coke and then just food stuff that we hadn't tried before and fancied a go of!

Marmite is gusting. I would rather go through s shark infested paddling pool than eat it. OK that's a bit dramatic. But i love lime marmalade. Over there we loveeeeeeeeee double stuff oreo's. Ummmmm a shop here sells a small packet for £4.95!!!!!!!!!! So will have to wait until we go next.

ok I know this and can't seem to remember.....I have to go to Wal-Mart with a client and will find out for you!

Almost all of the stuff in the US is made with high fructose corn syrup. This is why everything tastes sweet and we, as a nation, are getting fatter and fatter.

Tink
22-07-2008, 02:25 PM
Sunmaid Raisin bread I think.

Yes, look at ingredient labels. That gross stuff is in tons of things. I've stopped buying anything with that in it. I'm saving A LOT on groceries as a result.

I hate commercial bread. Yuck.

Johnie
22-07-2008, 02:33 PM
Yes Sunmaid is it!

You would absolutely be shocked at the stuff it's in. Weight Watchers and Special K are the ones that surprised me the most. We've been watching what we buy as well. Found a lovely bottled tea that is pure cane sugar, New Leaf is the brand.

Tink
22-07-2008, 02:38 PM
I think that's what gets me the most. All those supposedly healthy, or diet foods with that junk in it. There is no purpose on earth to have it either! :(

I don't care for sweet tea, but it's good that you found one without that poison.

I had a visitor from Italy tell me that our potatoes were sweet! She wanted to know where she could get 'real' potatoes. Now, I know that's not HFCS! LOL!

Tink
22-07-2008, 02:39 PM
Yes, 'Catz. You're in for quite a shock. Isn't someone in your family a diabetic? You'll notice a huge difference in blood glucose control if you can completely eliminate that additive.

Johnie
22-07-2008, 02:44 PM
Catz,
If you do a google search, you will be shocked! No other country on earth is allowed to use it. It makes you eat more as well.

:hug2:Tink....silly eh? LOL I just had tears spring to my eyes cause you remembered that LOL. I've worked with ppl over 6 yrs closely that don't remember...ok...whoosh lol

Yes...My Dad and my late Grandma...plus I am having some problems myself right now. lol Actually had to take my own advice and make an appointment to see my GP to find out what's wrong. I am a HUGE chicken when it comes to Docs....but the way my body is reacting right now...I know I need to see him. making the appoinment as we speak...i hate being on hold.

my dh and i decided from this point on we read lables for hfcs and avoid it. my mother suggested cutting gluten for awhile and see how i feel.

k doc appt set. next tuesday 9am.

Johnie
22-07-2008, 07:34 PM
:hug2: good luck at the dr hon. I feel so much better when I don't eat stuff with HFCS in it but you just wouldn't beleive what it's in. Mayo and ketchup..what the heck?

SleepinCatz
22-07-2008, 07:35 PM
yeah.. I did the search...freakin frightening! We avoid aspartame like the plague. I know what it does to me and how my moms body reacts to it. Once we started checking for it and elimanating it both of us did wayyy better. Never even thought about the hfcs....jeeze...I am so grateful to whatever made me start this thread to begin with.

SleepinCatz
22-07-2008, 07:36 PM
Mayo???? Good thing I know how tyo make homeade...why would they put it in Mayo?

Johnie
22-07-2008, 07:39 PM
Not all mayo. Duke's mayo doesn't have it in it and I like it better than Kraft. But, Duke's is a southern thing, you might have it there. But, it's in everything! BUT, if you go to the kosher aisle or where they keep the International stuff (Mexican, Asian, etc), you'll find that those products don't have HFCS in it. Also, Coke made in other countries doesn't have it.

SleepinCatz
22-07-2008, 07:41 PM
way good to know. Thanks Johnie! I may have been killing myself and thought I was doing good. Why do we have the food and drug for anyway? Seems somebody is slippin if we have so much bad infront of us....

Johnie
22-07-2008, 07:50 PM
Apparently the HFCS is way cheaper to add to stuff than sugar. It's way worse for you too. I won't touch margarine, it's one molecule away from being plastic! I'll have my real butter in moderation. We literally sat at a restaurant the other night watching the margarine on a very hot baked potato NOT melt......scary

SleepinCatz
22-07-2008, 07:59 PM

I'm thinking I either have a thyroid problem or a problem with yeast or gluten...or is that the same thing?

Johnie
22-07-2008, 08:34 PM
Not sure.

I have a thyroid issue. I take meds for it but I think I need to have it re-evaluated. I have this issue with my head sweating, it's embarrassing but the pills are doing nothing to stop it. I'm sitting here in my air conditioned office fine from the waist down and my head is sweaty right now :rolleyes008:

I dont like marmite either. I tried it when I was a child and thought it was disgusting and tried it again when I was older and still didnt like it.

Its true you either love it or hate it.

I think the bread is sweet too. The bread over here isnt as sweet.

I love the pretzels and I cant wait to get one when I hit the parks the first day and the funnel cakes are to die for. :p015:

Buy the bakery bread instead of the commercial bread, Mick. It's still probably a bit sweeter than in the UK, but you can taste the difference between bakery and commercial bread. :)

Sun Maid--the name of the raisin company.

Johnie, I have that same thing! I have Hashimoto's so take thyroid medication. Doesn't do much for the persperation let me tell you. It can get pretty embarrassing, too.

'Catz, wheat is the grain, of course. Gluten is an "aspect" of the grain (it's what you develop when you knead bread, makes it tender and light) so in some ways is wheat, yes.

I hate margarine and refuse to believe something man-made that tastes that icky is good for you. I rarely use butter, but I will use it (not right now with the diet and all). Olive oil is my 'fat' of choice.

Johnie
24-07-2008, 07:39 PM
Really? No one else ever seems to sweat on their heads except men :( Of course all this hair does not help one bit but i can't blame it all on the hair.

Dawn
24-07-2008, 07:57 PM
Yeah Sun Maid bread - I remember that was really nice. Except now you're going to tell me it's got that icky corn syrup in it. :(

So is that stuff used instead of sugar?

At least you know where you stand with sugar - all that artificial stuff is a bit scary. That's why I drink regular Coke here and not diet, except that when I go over to you guys it looks like I can't even drink that.

You can not make clotted cream hun. Its local to devon and cornwall. Luckily i live in cornwall although you can proberly get it in most shops in the country now. I would do a seacrch to see if you can buy it in USA. I would offer to send you some but it needs to be chilled which means it can not be sent.
I hate marmit, it yuck.
I love to buy pretzles, mickey coconuts and lots of maple syrup. Oh nearly forgot i love the carrot cake in Walmart. Best i have ever tasted.
We always buy the soda bread. We bought some white bread last year and it was more like sponge.

Johnie...my head sweats too. Always has. which is why if I wear hats I don't take them off...it's not just hat hair lol.

As for the High fructos Corn syrup...that nasty beastie is being banished from our home and we will not be getting anythin but water or unsweeten tea when we go out...eveybody in this town has splenda anyway on the tables lol.

I'm also banishing Gluten. Avoided it for 2days now and I can feel a difference already. I am however still going to the Doc next tuesday. If the thyroid is going bad then I will need help...but whatever has gone wrong I want it fixed.

I can buy clotted cream in Fresh Market and sometimes Whole Foods. Do you have either of those stores there, 'Catz? It's nice to use instead of butter, but only sparingly!

My Aunt was the same way Johnie. More women that you realize, eh?

I wear hats to keep the sun off, or when it's bitter cold (obviously not here) or there is a cold wind blowing that will hurt my ears (usually use a headband style then).
