The other two eggs I was waiting on where both dead-in-shell babies :sigh: It's bound to happen and other breeders have had a terrible year this year. Little Buddha will have to be on her own.

Sorry to hear this, Josh.

I suppose Mother Nature knows best but it's still hard to take.

:rotfl: @ coming out of your shell.

It's hard to take ut this is just what you have to expect when breeding anything, you have good years and bad years, this just happens to be a very bad one! :sigh:

Oh no, im sorry Josh :sigh:
You say other breeders have had a bad year too - is there a reason for it?

There must be a reason but no-one is any the wiser, we're not sure why it is. The weather has been quite good and then switched suddenly so it could be that (tortoises can sense the change in baromatic pressure as a trigger to hibernation.) As that would be the only way eggs in an incubator could know the weather conditions on the outside.

It doesn't sound very feasible. A more likely reason is the amount of bad summers we've had repeatedly meaning that breeding conditions have been less than ideal.

Ach. :( That's terrible news Josh. I know that nature has her own scheme though...

I do think it's a good reason to be able to keep your little one! After all, what's one more tort? :D :D (Don't tell you parents I said that, ok)?

I can't keep Buddha. If anything it has been a trigger for me to sell more of last years babies. In all honesty the chances of having more dead-in-shell babies will only get higher if I keep more related tortoises.

None of my current adults are related, but if I keep these 4 I am potentially letting 4 females breed with their Dad, or however many males breed with their Mum & Sister. I have spoken to a fellow breeder who also thinks it's best to sell or re-home 2 of last years babies. I don't know how I'm going to pick two of last years babies but it is sensible for me to do

Well that is bad news :(

Sounds like you have everything under control though and are giving your torts the best chance at having healthy babies

Sorry to hear that. A friend has some free range tortoises that just rome the garden. She foung 6 eggs and put them in an incubater and 5 of them hatched. Perfect little things. Hopefully we'll get one of them.

What species does she have? I get a shock every time our eggs hatch as I forget how small they are!
