Actress Estelle Getty famous for her role as Dorothy's mother in the golden girls has past away at the age of 84.

She played the character of Sophia in the classic series of the eighties. One of her famous phrases was " picture it Sicily 1924 ".

Even though she played the oldest character she was in fact one of the youngest of the main four characters.

I agree she was highly talented. Apparently she struggled for success for 40 years until she got the role of a lifetime ( in the golden girls ) in 1985.

She was a great comedienne and had the gift of perfect comedy timing.

R I P Estelle.

Awww this makes me so sad :(

I used to watch Golden Girls with my Nana and now as an adult I am watching them all over again. She really was something special.

We did that the other day! I decided I wanted to be Blanche. Alysia is Sophia. My mom said she gets to be "dumb Rose" and my poor sister said "I get stuck with Dorothy!"

I was Dorothy, come to think of it, I still am. A little bossy, not the prettiest girl in the room, and fall in love with the wrong guys. Yep Dorothy. Love Bee Arthur's acting.

Only every time I read the thread title! I remember the episode when Phoebe was pretending to be her!

Awwww, I loved the Golden Girls esp Estelle . I'm sad to hear that she had Alzeheimers . RIP Estelle
