View Full Version : US banknotes
They've changed.
Can you still use the old ones? I have about $10 in the old greenbacks. Can I use them or not?
Oh yes. They're all good.

I don't think our money ever expires.......
Ours does. There's a £20 that's being phased out right now so if anyone has the note with Edward Elgar on it get it to the bank and change it for a new one before it becomes useless.
I have an old $2 bill - is that still ok?

You might find some cashiers have NO idea what a $2 bill is......

I tried to use a $2 bill the other day that I found cleaning out a kitchen drawer and the teenager at Walgreens asked me if it was real
Issy, how on earth did you go back home with that much money left

 we always come back with $'s & travellers cheques. We just put them away until our next trip.

I think there might be an issue with travellers checks in the future. I was in AAA the other day, they no longer sell them. They sell a debit/credit card.
I was also in Office Max and they had a big sign stating they would no longer be accepting tc's as of Sept.
I think there is something up with Traveler's checks too. Have seen signs in several different places warning that they won't be taken after a given date.
A $2 bill and a Susan B. Anthony $1 coin will cause a mild stir if you try to use them. The gold color $1 Sacajawea Coin, too.
If you find a paper bill (it will be the old version, not the new) that says Silver Certificate on it, you may want to hang on to it and take it to a collector or money buyer shop. Quite often they are worth quite a bit more than their face value.

Not in the next couple of weeks I hope! :mental: I would seriously consider NOT doing TCs if at all possible. The prepaid card may well be the way to go. Although I feel relatively certain that WDW will continue to accept the TC for a while.

Oh yes, those dollar coins throw lots of people for a loop. Sometimes soda/candy machines give them back as change.

Bit late for us now!
You should be ok for the most part, Lisa. WDW will take them for some time (they always work to do what the guest needs most) and you can still cash them at their Main St. bank, can you not?
It's been years since I've used TCs at WDW so don't remember what all they have in place.

Lisa is going to NYC, not WDW.
Oh geez. I forgot that. See? Talk about stereotyping! :sorry: If someone mentions needing dollars I automatically assume Disney!
I would think you are ok though still. If worst comes to worst, you can take them to a bank to cash... yes?

Don't worry Tink everybody thinks I am going to WDW they can't quite believe I would be going anywhere else!
We have a little cash as well as TC's but yes worst case we can always cash them at a bank  I like using TC's because I can see exactly how much I am spending - I would be lethal with a CC or one of those prepaid cards!
Yes, I agree whole heartedly!!! Cash/visible is the only way I can control what is going on. Credit cards are way too easy and hard to follow...
Unless you say you are going to use them for one thing and one thing only (like on our recent Louisiana jaunt; gas only).

That is exactly why I don't charge to the room at Disney! I spend WAY more than I normally would.
Lisa, you are going to want cash on hand in NYC for the food vendors and if you want to buy things on the street.
Yep. NYC is one of the places where you really want cash at the ready. How else are you going to buy those "original" handbags and stuff?

I'll make sure we do - Daniel is desperate from a hot dog from a street vendor! :blech:
Honestly? I LOVE eating from street vendors in NYC! All but the duck with the head still on it in Chinatown. :lipwobble: I gave that a pass...
