It is with crushing sadness that I share the following with you.

Mairead's sister Sharon has been diagnosed with lung cancer. The prognosis is very grim.

Please send all of your prayers, good wishes and comfort to Mairead and her family as they walk this incredibly difficult journey with Sharon.

There is nothing for me to say other than we love you Mairead. Our hearts are breaking and our souls ache for you, Sharon and your families.

Thank you all :hug2:

We are shocked, stunned and absolutely devastated but have to be strong for them all. Sharon is calm on the exterior, i have no idea what's going on behind that. She has a positiveness that can't help but make you feel that way when you are with her. My big sister is truly amazing (she's only 4 years older than me!)

She is devastated for Martin and the boys, but I feel she is (as we are) taking comfort from the knowledge that she will be with her little girl again.

Thank you again for your support, it means so much.

Some of Sharons work friends put their good wishes for her on Facebook, but we had to remove them as not all the family know yet and we don't want them to find out that way. Unfortunately that's the way some found out about Sarah, it wasn't the best......

Thank you all again, i take comfort in your care and good wishes, I really don't know how Martin and the boys are going to survive this :hug2:

Just wanted to let you know Sharon's coming home today, and is back to the hospital on Tuesday to start Chemo. As long as it works it'll give her a few more months with us, and make her breathing easier so all your good wishes would be much appreciated. :hug2:

She's been without oxygen since yesterday morning and has been outside for some fresh air (in a wheelchair) a couple of times, which she really enjoyed after been stuck in there for a week.

We've all scrubbed the house from top to bottom (3 flippin' floors!) and can't wait for her to get back there now.

Tink
08-10-2010, 11:54 AM
What sort of foods can she have? Having some favorites waiting, with some nice things to drink (whatever is allowed) will be good too.

I spent quite some time in hospital long ago, and coming home to real food (even the most simple) and nice juices/non-alcoholic drinks was wonderful. Milk shakes those sorts of things...

Would she like some cards, Mairead? I mean cheery, silly, fun ones, not hand wringing angst ridden ones?

If you think it would be ok, we could do a "card shower" and send her all sorts of cards to give her a smile?

Do you know what Tink, forget what i said about cards in my PM. Now i've read what you've written here i can see how much fun it could be for her to receive funny cards every so often. That's actually a lovely idea!

She's been craving scrambled eggs on wholemeal toast with real butter all week so the ingredients are waiting at home for her. She'll probably go and change her blinking mind now won't she!

I will take note of what you've said about the food Tink, and we can sort that out. I gather she's been told she can have a normal diet but no grapefruits, which is fine as she doesn't like them anyway!

I've had a few tears from Mum and Dad today, i can't even begin to imagine what it feels like for them, to lose both Grandaughter then Daughter. Just like we couldn't imagine how Sharon and Martin felt to lose Sarah....

Now Daniel and Mark have to somehow comes to terms with losing their sister and Mum, and Martin his daughter and wife. Seriously, how does anybody do that?

I feel strangely controlled about it. After the initial shock and bewilderment, i now feel practical and matter of fact. We cannot change it, we cannot make it better. With Sarah we always thought there was a chance she could survive, with Sharon we know differently so i feel we must all treat it and speak about it as it is. Is that a good or bad thing, i'm really not sure. Am i fooling myself that I am coping with it?

I feel that when we get to that dreadful point in the future I am going to fall apart so I need to be in control now and help everybody else to see it that way, although I think we all are actually.

Sorry, that was a bit long-winded. :sorry:

Mairead :hug2: It sounds to me like you are coping with it really well, and no, not fooling yourself. If you do fall apart somewhat later on, well you can deal with it then, and as MP said, we will still be here to help you. But I think that to be the way you are right now will be brilliant for Sharon, to have someone who she doesn't have to try too hard with, and someone who she feels is strong enought to genuinely unload on if she need to. She may need that at some point, and she may not want to do that as emotionally with Martin and the boys, maybe.

I don't know how any of you deal with this on top of Sarah....

So good to hear shes coming home, to her own things and where she can be with loved ones 24/7....

Huge hugs to you, and lots of love xxxx

Thank you Deb, one day at a time for at least 6 months would be absolutely brilliant so let's hope the treatment will give her and us that!

After chatting with her best friend on Wednesday i learnt they'd opened up to her a lot more than to us about Sarah, which is good, so i've told her that she can play her part in being there for them both in that way. She is absloutely lovely and an honourary family member, as are her girls and now baby Laila too!

We are all being this way with Sharon, every one of us, because that's how her erm.....i can't think of a word.....how she is. Normal.

But we do know she is keeping things underneath that mask she has.

I don't know if I have told you, but my sister is bloody aamazing and so are her husband and children!

 Mairead, speaking as someone who is coping with cancer, I can tell you how much the things like cards mean. I can't put it in words when someone takes the time to tell you that you are in their thoughts and prayers what it does for the mind and spirit. That said there is always always hope. My godfather was diagnosed with end stage lung cancer and lived for 7 years. That was back in the 80's. Chemo is much better now. :hug2: :hug2: :hug2:

Tink
08-10-2010, 06:39 PM
I am so glad she's home! :9: :tralala: I can feel the love emanating from you to your family Mairead, and your coping is what it takes right now. You are doing an incredible job. Falling apart later? Yes, I can't imagine that you wouldn't, but right now you'll do what it takes to give her every beautiful day left. Won't it be INCREDIBLE if it's the 7 years of days that Trish's family experienced!

So, I think the cards are a great idea!

If anyone wishes to send one for Sharon, perhaps we should route them through you?

If you want to give me your mailing address Mairead, then anyone who wishes to send a card can contact me and we'll be all set?

Letting Sharon know that a huge number of nameless and faceless people (to her, of course) are thinking about her and wishing her well will only help.

I really feel for you all and think you are doing an amazing job :hug2:. You are right in your thinking that sadly you can do nothing to change things but what you can do is make the most of the time you all have left together. Do things that will give you lasting memories of your precious time spent with you sister. The simplest thing can give you many happy memores. How about making a memory box with her that just the two of you can do together then when you feel the time is right you can give to her dh and ds.

she's had a great weekend thanks, no oxygen, no nebuliser

Her 3 sisters in law came down from up north, she had a really good day out with them yesterday ( in a wheelchair for the hard parts) and went out for dinner in the evening.

Martin was out with them on Saturday for food and a few drinks, Sharon had a bit of 'alone' time for a couple of hours (Dan was home for a bit of it though) then her best friend came along with strawberry and cream cakes! She thoroughly enjoyed it.

Chemo starts tomorrow morning.

Well now, Sharon has asked me to pass on her heartfelt thanks for the cards and gifts she has received, she has been thrilled!

Last weekend they had a trip to Stonehenge, and stayed in Salisbury.

2nd treatment was on Tuesday and she's still doing ok so far, just cracking on with it you know? What a fabulous girl she is.

They held a fireworks party last night which was good fun, and my brother has shaved his hair off to support her!

On Tuesday we have the chinese buffet to look forwards to, and they have a weekend trip to Bath next weekend.

The following weekend they have a trip to London with overnight stay in the Marriott County Hall (http://www.marriott.co.uk/hotels/travel/lonch-london-marriott-hotel-county-hall/), a meal at Skylon (http://www.skylon-restaurant.co.uk/bar/), and a Champagne Flight on the London Eye all booked and paid for by her workmates!

It's so lovely to see Sharon being spoilt and to see them having such a good time! :hug2:

:hug2::hug2: to you Mairead for allowing us to boost your sister's spirits. Also, it is so great to hear of all the fun things Sharon and family are getting to experience.

We should all live like this  you just never know how much time you have.
