Has anyone tried those strategies that are listed in the books? like go anticlockwise when you get into a park because everyone else will go the other way then hit these rides in this order? Do they work?

We usually just get to the park at opening and head straight to what was a "must do" and then just wandered about from there. We've always gone during quieter periods though.

Last time we went to Islands of Adventure we went in and literally everyone entering the park turned left to Hulk and Spiderman so we turned right to Seussland and we literally were the only people on that side of the park. The cast member at the entrance to Cat in the Hat was most surprised to see people wanting to go on their ride. We followed the park around from there and never had any significant crowd numbers until we got back round to the Jurassic Park river ride.

We don't tend to do early  so we have to have some kind of strategy because we go later.

So we plan to go specifically on one day to see the parades then on another day whilst parades are on, we do the most popular rides because whilst everyone's in line watching the parade, there's virtually no queue on the popular rides.

I've never found the touring strategies in the books work all that well

we always go for opening, and usually go the opposite way to the majority it works yes until everyone meets up

We always get to the parks before opening and pick a popular area to do first and then just go around however we feel. The next time we head to the same park we still get there early but start in a different area. :D
