Yeah. Probably. But my reasoning is primarily for my DW's benefit. She's currently running on my old 15 inch Macbook Pro that's still based on the PowerPC architecture. I REALLY want to get her upgraded to Intel so if I were to upgrade my current MacBook Pro to the new ones, then she could have my existing one. Which gets her a 17" and Intel.

Tom (:macwave:... thinking...)

I just downloaded the new facetime HD for mac and it's really good  I haven't used the call yet but I love the idea of it! I can see this being made ahead of a possible iPad release!

Get yee behind me satan-apple-pimp I can see your true form and will not be swayed by your shiny ways and faster ports!

I guess you'd get the 17 again?

I so don't need a new one. I didn't need a new one when I bought this one. I didnt need a new one when I bought the last one, or the one before, or the one before.

I totally wanna upgrade now but there's no way I can afford it so I shall just wait until 2012 in case they completely change the aesthetics of the range.

Morning folks!

Satan-Apple-Pimp here.

The time has come the warus said,
to speak of many things.
Of airplane floats, and flying boats,
And other things with wings.

(With apologies to Lewis Carol)

Well, it finally happened. I guess I jinxed myself (or was that janxed)?

My DW's trusty old 15" Macbook Pro hard drive died yesterday. This is so old, it's one of the IDE drives. I managed to get it out of the computer thinking I had a spare that I could use. Alas, no such luck. It turns out that all the spare drives I had lying around are SATA, not IDE.

So, I had an enclosure that would take it so stuck it in there and managed to save 99% of her data. Only missed a few system files. But of course, the things not bootable. Anyway, looked around trying to find anyone locally that had a stock of old IDE drives.
Do you think I could?

Nope.

Not a chance. :crywave:

So, rather than wasting anymore time trying to hunt down an IDE drive to put in it. Cheap though they may be. I've decided it's time to give the thing a proper burial, say a permanent good bye to the PowerPC architecture, and spring for a new Macbook Pro. 17 inch thank you very much. Fortunately, my company has a buying agreement with Apple so I get a bit of a discount.

Now, the only question is, who gets the new one. Me or my DW? What do you think the answer will be?

Argh  you WILLED that to happen you know

I've been looking over the good old 17 myself and extremely tempted. Which spec etc?

Argh  you WILLED that to happen you know

No! I didn't do it! It wasn't me. You can't prove it!

Which spec etc?

Prolly just go with the standard 17" model.

2.2GHz quad-core
Intel Core i7
4GB 1333MHz
750GB 5400-rpm1
Intel HD Graphics 3000
AMD Radeon HD 6750M with 1GB GDDR5
Built-in battery (7 hours)

I'd really like to have the 500GB 7200 rpm drive but that's a build to order option and I don't really have the time to wait. Gotta buy off the shelf so to speak in order to promote domestic tranquility. :surrender:

Got my firewire external hard drive built with Snow Leopard and my DW's applications, files, settings, etc. So, once we get the new machine this afternoon, it should be a relatively simple process to use the Migration Assistant to move everything over.

Wonder which machine I'll end up with? New or old?

Tom (:macwave:... and I've got to buy her lunch too!)

Has to be new doesn't it :D

Not tempted by the matte screen at all? Ive got the glossy 15" of course and it's great but I always wonder if I should spec the matte. The great thing about the 17 is there's really not much chance of options because everythings built in

I don't know. I've got the matte on my current MBP. From what I've seen, the glossy isn't as bad as I once thought it was. So, we'll go with the glossy this time around. For stuff like pictures it's actually better. How well the glossy will be while in XCode remains to be seen.

Tom (:macwave:... having a glossy day!)

I spent hours at the apple store looking at both last time I bought the 15 and in the end decided to go for glossy.

Absolutely no problem with it at all and of course my imac 27" is glossy too, no option there!

Oddly enough, I read your post as my DW and I were having lunch on the way to the Apple Store. Timely indeed.

Honestly I know I've said it before, but I keep trying to talk myself out of it.. every year I get another one even though the one before was perfect. Apple could sell me magic beans and I'd be happily skipping all the way home with them

Its the same for me I find myself physically averting my eyes from iPad 2 adverts - I feel drawn even though I don't need it

For the record the one you sold me the macbook pro is still absolutely rock solid and a perfectly functioning machine - so you could have just stuck with that mate ;)

I know! absolutely.. I must have had three since that one and they were all rock solid and perfect too.

There's no hope for me. I need to be locked away in some kind of apple purchase 12 step programme or something

It says it all about me, that today when walking through town someone waved and smiled.. couldn't think who they were and until I finally realised that they worked in the Apple Store :thud: I'm in there that often.

I think I'm responsible for spreading the Apple Virus. All of my friends seem to have acquired iPhones recently, as well as my Dad & Sister. I even caught Dad looking at the new MBPs, would not be happy if he had a better one than me though!
