another baggage question

We fly with VA.
From VA website....

In addition to the cabin baggage allowance, the following personal items may be carried on board:
• A handbag, pocketbook or purse i.e. which is appropriate to normal travelling dress and is not being used as a container for the transportation of articles which could otherwise be regarded as baggage.
• An overcoat or wrap.
• An umbrella (pointed or/and sharp prohibited) or walking stick.
• A small camera and/or pair of binoculars.
• A reasonable amount of reading matter for the flight.

The small camera mentioned - would this include the camera bag which also carries the extra lense?

Very hard to say in my experience because it seems to depend on who's around checkin/gate at the time.

We've seen people get on board with carry on (large), coat, laptop, handbag, large camera case then we've had days when they've gone through the queue telling everyone to put handbags, cameras, books etc inside the one carry on.

I'd think you'd be pretty safe with a compact sized camera on its own, ok with compact camera in case, ok with dslr round your neck, but starting to get iffy with camera and lens in a larger case IF they decide to be jobsworth that day.
