At the moment, it is cheaper for us to use VH for a flydrive rather than VA for flight only.

Question 1 - am I correct in thinking it's ok to book a flydrive and not pick up the car?

Question 2 - If I drop the car insurance to the basic liability package, the price drops further as they automatically give you the fully inclusive in the original quote. It says "Note: for the Basic package, there are compulsory insurances and taxes that will be payable locally"
By not picking the car up anyway, these charges won't occur will they?

Correct on both counts! I've done exactly the same thing on several occasions

I was kinda worried in case for some reason they tracked me down at the hotel and moaned at me about leaving the car  but of course they didn't :)

Yep we do it every time!

Just booked our 3rd flydrive and never pick up the car.

I like to be able to book early to secure a price and as it's a package pay it off bit by bit.
Always found it cheaper than waiting and booking the same flight with VA!

yep me too I must admit

Some advantages to VH v VA as you say..... frequent virgin club = 10% discount without waiting for any online ones, downtown disney checkin free, Vroom access and so on

It niggles me a little that it should be even CHEAPER if we could just say no-car at all but then it wouldn't be a holiday package so :/

Just curious, but could you use your FC miles for reward seats with VH?
No doubt I could ring and find out but hopefully someone here will know.

hmmm I didnt THINK so :/ although I believe you can swap miles for VH vouchers which you can then use.

Interesting point though and I'm not 100% sure

That's what we had to do when we booked in 2009. It may have changed since then but I doubt it.

you can trade miles for virgin holidays vouchers but its stupidly expensive like 10,000 miles for £50 which when you look at it is really bad

for 20,000 miles you can start getting upgrades to premium economy and companion seats

for 2000 miles each you can get miles & money savings of about 50-100 pounds per seat

so anyway you look at it its really bad value unless you have so many miles you'll never use them

Hi no you can't use your airmiles off VH only VA but you can use them for vouchers. Problem is with VA you have to still pay the taxes which are high anyway we have enough for two flights but the taxes really push it up and what we are saving is not that much.

Don't forget we discount VH as well.

Thanks for that.
We have used our FC miles for upgrades to UC on our last few trips as well as the one we have planned for June this year. [It sure has spoiled us for travelling by any other way, although there is no way that I would pay the full price to travel in UC, but if I can use my FC miles then what the heck!]
I was just wondering if VH would allow me to do the same...or indeed would there be any advantage in travelling VH as opposed to VA.

VH you pay deposit VA unless booked with a TA you pay in full.
