...but don't expect too much in the way of a report!

Herself and I are going on another Olivia cruise! A colleague of one of Herself's nieces bid on and won a cruise during a charity auction. She had no idea what Olivia meant (teeeheee) and when she found out, she decided she needed to sell it! So, enter Niece who just happened to know two people...

So! Lucky us, we were able to purchase a very nice cruise for a very reasonable amount. :D

We are going on the Majestic Alaskan cruise out of Vancouver, BC in September. As neither of us have ever been to Vancouver we are taking some days before the cruise to go early and explore a very beautiful city.

We are staying at a lovely boutique hotel, about five minutes walk from the pier.

We are still deciding on flights. We can fly from MCO to Vancouver of course, or we can fly out of Tampa. If we do that we can get rid of our luggage in Tampa and not see it again until we are on board!

Or we can fly out of MCO (or Tampa) to Seattle, WA and then take the Cascade train to Vancouver.

The only reason I'd like to do that is to visit Salumi, Mario Battali's father's salumi shop in Seattle. :D Yep, it's always about food with me.

But, I get motion sick on trains (weird, I know). I can take Dramamine though...

So, decisions to make on that yet.

We'll have to get Herself some warm footwear. I have boots from when I traveled the east coast, but she's not had any since we came here. We'll need some other warm things too, but don't want to end up buying things we'll not ever use again.

Ports of call will be Juneau, Skagway and Ketchikan. Quite similar to Disney.

We've not decided what we want to do at each port yet, but we have loads of time to figure that out.

My profile photo is from our last Olivia cruise. :D Of course, Canada allows marriage between two consenting adults. :D :D :D

How fantastic!!!!!

I've still not done a cruise although I'd love to. Not sure an Olivia cruise would be an ideal fit though  ;-)

how exciting to have something new to plan for! :hug2:

I have no idea what a Olivia cruise is but I think I can work if I put 2 and 2 together

How lovely for you both and as you say lots of time to plan and make decisions about the route you will take. How cold will it be in September, I thought it didn't get really cold until a bit after then?

Something lovely to look forward to Tink and I can't wait to see your photo's

Thanks everyone! Tom, no problem! I made the comments in the other thread before I started this one.

We aren't going to have a Canadian ceremony. :) We are considering a NY one, some day... but not Canadian. We are not Michael and Ben, you know! ;) (An allusion to a wonderful series that used to be on).

Here is a link to the hotel. I simply found this place so appealing. I like the old world character of it, and it's very close to the pier... We've reserved a one bedroom suite. What do you think? Looks nice, yes?

Sounds wonderful Sis, I have to admit I didn't have any idea what it was either! The cruise sounds breathtaking, I have friends that spent quite a bit of time in Vancouver, I'll check with them to see if they have any suggestions for you both.. You should try to pick up a NorthFace jacket that can convert from a heavier weight to a windbreaker. I bought one for Ty this Christmas and it's lovely! Of course they're on sale now!!!I finally caved and bought a pair of Ugghs(spelling?) I have to admit that they are toasty and Very comfortable and come in alot of styles now.:hug2:

Oh my goodness, sounds wonderful! If it wasn't for the fact that I'd like to go with Mr Deb then it would be perfect ;)

A cruise to Alaska is on our shortlist for the next few years, with a few days in Vancouver and Vancouver Island thrown in. I went skiing in Whistler years ago (which was incredible in itself), and as we drove through Vancouver I had my nose pressed up against the window wishing we could stop, and vowed I'd go back one day and do it properly! I sometimes have a little look at potential hotels there...I am going to go and look at your link now :)

So exciting!!!!

Hey Tink,

I know you will just love the cruise! BTW there are two ways to go on Alaskan cruises..and you have chosen in my opinion the winner. You either go northbound or southbound out of AK. If you go as you are northbound, you will finish your trip with an awesome trip to the college glaciers at the end. I think that really is the best way to go.

Also Vancouver is an awesome city. Does your cruise allow you to check your bags so they get to the boat without going through baggage claim? IF so I would suggest you take them up on that. The lines at customs gets freaking crazy with international flights and you could get stuck in line for an hour or so.

PM me if you have any questions on the trip. We did it in 2006 on a Carnival cruise and it was awesome.

Great suggestions all! I would love any recommendations for how to spend time in Vancouver. We'll poke and explore, but it's always nice to have suggestions from folks who've been there before.

I don't know about the bag drop off, but will sure check on it. We looked into flying out of Tampa so the bags could be "dropped" there and then we'd meet up with them again at the ship. A mere $700 for the favor! Needless to say, we aren't going that route.

Sister Tinkfan tell me more about that jacket! (I'll look it up on the 'net). I fully appreciate what you are saying about Uggs, but I just can't go there. :sorry:

Becca! White flannel party!

An Alaskan cruise is my "dream cruise". Will it be whale watching season when you go?

Tink
22-01-2012, 04:06 PM
I honestly don't know, Dorothy. We have to do some research and find out what sorts of options there will be during the cruise and in Vancouver (seasons, I mean).

We did find a lovely little place call the Salt Tasting Room... it's a place where you select your choice of artisinal cheeses and cured meats and wine... :D The varities on offer change with the season and availability. The place supports the local producers of the items so I'm really looking forward to that.
