We have a houseful of cats. We've added another in the last year. He lives outside but does come in occasionally. His name is Max. He was an adult when he came to us full of battle scars so he's probably lived outdoors his whole life. He was lying in the yard the other night and when he started to walk, it looked like he was drunk. He's been to the vet today and a blood test has confirmed that he has feline leukemia :( He's also contagious to other cats. The other cats have had their regular shots but I don't think there is one for feline leukemia?

We're going to put Max down after we've all had a chance to say goodbye to him. Apparently this is common in old tom cats per the vet.

I often wonder why it's considered humane to put down an animal who is suffering yet we can't do that to humans.......

:hug2: It's really hard to lose a family member--even when you know it's best for them--and in this case, other family members.

I often wonder why it's considered humane to put down an animal who is suffering yet we can't do that to humans.......

I often wonder the same. Unfortunately, I can make a good arguement for either side--and the middle!

I often wonder this as well.

I am so sorry to hear your sad news, but remember you gave him a kind loving home and made him feel wanted. :hug2::hug2:

I know it. The vet said he can't be outside since he's having a hard time walking and he wouldn't be able to defend himself. He also said he can't come back in the house with the other cats. So, we're all going to go over and say goodbye to him.

Awwww :hug2: I'm so sorry.

My very first kitty died of this very same thing. He got in a fight and we have never had an outdoor cat since. I just couldn't take it. Makes me think of my poor fluffy :sigh;

Run and play happy and healthy at Rainbow Bridge Max

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor;
those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again,
just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance.
His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers.
Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted,
and when you and your special friend finally meet,
you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again.
The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head,
and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

It is sad. He was a good cat and had lived a long time per the vet. We were only lucky enough to know him this last year. I'm glad we were able to see him this morning. We had a proper goodbye.
