View Full Version : had some bad news

found out today that my boxer Charlie isn't very well at all. We had his thyroid levels checked a couple of weeks ago because he was losing fur and quite lethargic. The day we got the results he collapsed in the garden, luckily Caitlin was there and called me, stayed with him and put a towel on him until i got home. We started him on the pills but he seemed to go downhill, wasn't eating etc. We went back today and he had more bloods taken, an ECG and xRay, upshot is he has heart problems. We could take him to a specialist vet in Cambridge for scans and 24 hour ECGs etc but due to his breed and age it probably wouldn't be anything they could do. There is no cure certainly. We've decided as a family that we don't want to put him through all this for what could possibly be an extra 6 months. The vet I have here is wonderful and will do all she can to keep him comfortable with medication but no one knows what his prognosis is. He is only 7 bless him and our last boxer was 7 when he dropped down dead in front of us from a heart problem. I'm so sad right now but really proud of my kids how they've dealt with it and sat down with us and told us what they think. This boxer is going to be the most pampered in the country for however long he's got. Thanks for listening :sorry:

Bit of an update, the steroid injection they gave yesterday has obviously done something and he's eating and drinking today. Had another injection today then high dose oral steroids for a week then reducing. They are sending his test results to the cardiac specialist for them to look at and hopefully they can give a better idea of whether it's the growth on his atrium causing the problems or a heart defect. From there the vet can work out the best treatment plan to keep him as well as possible for as long as possible.

Please make sure guys that you have insurance! It seems like a lot per month but worth it when something like this happens!

I'm very sad to announce that Charlie lost his fight today. We were struggling to get a diagnosis and in the end it was one of Lymphoma. We all managed to say goodbye to him and the vet practice has been so wonderful to us. RIP Charlie, see you over rainbow bridge.
