View Full Version : And we are off...!

So we are on our way to London.

Taxi related crisis in that he couldn't open one of the car doors. Had to perch in the back squished against suitcase.

Train related crisis: one cancelled, another delayed, change at Newport instead of Cardiff.

At least we managed to grab a quick cuppa in the first class lounge with Mickey before being ushered off onto a connecting train! 12580.vB

Further travel related updates later when we make further progress :-)

Seems like there are always bumps in the road leading to a great vacation. Keep trekking.

Hi all,

We had to walk over to platform one. When we arrived, we was told to move to platform 4. Then boarded the train and just to be told that we need to get off(!)

Thankfully we could get back on the same train so we are now going to London! :mental:

Have now arrived in London. A slightly hair-raising taxi drive later (almost sandwiched between a bus and a van at 40mph) we are now on the Gatwick Express on the way to the hotel at the airport. :mental:

Yep. Flight is tomorrow at 1pm but we prefer to arrive the night before, do the twilight check in, have breakfast in style and get some shopping in before we fly off.

Mickey is kicking back a bit after his train journey. 12584.vB

So. Dinner done. Nom nom.

Back to hotel room for cuppa and little nibble. Caught Mickey trying to steal my tea even though his excuse was "using the steam to cleanse my skin".

Yeah yeah.

Blimey that's a lot of money. Perhaps they have overbooked the flight. On a flight back from Washington we had paid for the exit seats in economy but because they needed the seats we got bumped up to premium economy at the gate for no charge. Might be worth a go

Are you on one of the refurbs, you would have seen by your seating plan

Yep. Delighted to find out we are on one of the refurbished 747s. Our chosen seats were based on the old plane though so we had to haggle about where we were going to be seated. Virgin staff-lady-person was very helpful and very patient with our 101 questions and gave us entry to the premium gatwick security system (so we don't have to queue) and put premium economy tickets on our bags so they come out first, even though we are in steerage. Sorry. "economy". Tempted by the upgrade but at 500 for both of us that's a little hard to justify.

And would buy lots of nice goodies.

Or a posh watch each!

Just getting ready now to leave the hotel room and have breakfast at Frankie and Benny's.

Yes we will be very early. But I have OCD about being late so Jeff us very accommodating about that. And my constant paranoia about losing passports, tickets and money. So he let's me supervise those too.

See you when we are in departures! http://img.tapatalk.com/d/12/09/06/pe9u6avu.jpg

I have that paranoia too, how a passport can jump in 5 mins from a zipped inside pocket I don't know LOL

Have fun guys and safe journey :)

Breakfast: done. Stuffed full of scrambled eggs and tea.

Now wandering the shops. Have noticed some bizarre looking chairs in Departures. So of course we decided we needed to have a go.

Jeff's didn't move. Mine span around and wobbled so much I started to feel I should audition for the role of Davros in the new Doctor Who series.

And while writing this I've just been ferociously sniffed at by the Police sniffer dogs. Honest, no drugs here.

Unless you count the "Rescue Remedy" which I hardly think constitutes a hard drug.

Now. Shopping. Not 'shipping' as my auto-correct seems to want to say all the time. Followed by some small alcoholic treats in the private lounge.

(away from all the riff raff).

Oooh so glad you are on a refurb, this gives me hope for 2 weeks time :fingers: Make sure you take some photos :D The new entertainment system is supposed to be brilliant!

We always have breakfast at the Hilton and then go back to the room for a while before we go across to the airport.

Have fun shopping :wiggle:

Shopping almost done.

Treated myself to a new Fossil watch. Jeff bought some new Oakley sunglasses. Had to remortgage the house but hey ho.

Have now retired to the private lounge (away from chavs in their shell suits dragging screaming kids behind them on their way to Costa del So-and-so) where Mickey is enjoying an alcoholic beverage while watching the planes take off.

Gentlemen, you certainly know how to travel in style! The train trip getting there sounds a little harrowing, as does the cab ride, but you are now in the airport and clearly having a proper start to your much deserved holiday!!

Mickey seems to be enjoying quite well too.

Safe and comfortable flight. I'd not have paid that much for an upgrade either and I'm all about comfort and upgrades when flying.

Enjoy!! (Or I should say, continue to enjoy)!

Well, you've certainly had an adventure so far. Now keep Mickey out of those alcoholic drinks. Lord knows we don't want him drunk and staggering off and missing the flight.

Clarkkent

And we are at the gate!
Couple of drinks at the lounge. Followed by free jack Daniels samples. Blergh.

Through to the gate and we will be flying on/in/with:

Drum roll..

Barbarella!

So. We are still here.

Barbarella is apparently out of action for some yet to be explained reason. Which means they're having to de-camp the entire contents of one plane onto another which is likely to take a minimum of an hour. Which we all know means at least two hours before we take off.

That literally means all planes, trains and automobiles we have used to go on holiday have had delays, cancellations or something's broken. Let's just hope that's it!

Saving grace: ("apparently") we will still be on one of the refurb-ed planes.

Updates when we know more...

Update:

In a last minute "sod it and see" we decided to ask about premium economy again to see if there were any left.

Initial conversations revealed a few seats left at 254 each. Eeek. Decided "what the hell" and treat ourselves due to all the delays.

Tickets written on in biro. Fair enough.

Waved bank card in front of very nice lady who wrote on a piece of paper "comp". Took a few seconds to realise this meant "free"!!! :jawdrop:

Woohoo. I ain't never gonna complain about Virgin after this!

Two upgrades to PE free of charge. Ithankyou.

Brilliant news on the free upgrade :happydance: and you are still on a refurb - this is the start of things going right for you both :D :hug2: Woohoo, the holiday has really started :D

Are you in the bubble or downstairs  The bubble used to be really nice, quiet and relaxed, but with economy passengers now upstairs as well, I think it will have lost it's "specialness" if there is such a word

We have arrived.

Well actually it was last night but we were so tired that, well frankly, you lot had to wait till this morning... ;)

Flight was nice and uneventful. Despite being two hours delayed. Premium economy is nice and as we were at the front at the bulkhead so I had oodles of leg room. Which, being 6'2", was delightful. Could even cross my legs which was heaven. Jeff was more interested in all the free booze they kept throwing at him (probably just to keep him quiet).

We will try for an upgrade on the way home, see what fate decides.

Magical express to the hotel (Coronado Springs) where, ironically, we were greeted by a chap from the UK. Small world. Reliably informed that "the computer says you have the quick service dining plan". Cue a half hour discussion, one supervisor, one general manager, two phone calls and much (moderately calm) repetition of "if you see what it says in black and white on my paperwork you'll see we upgraded to the moderate dining plan, not quick service.".

First time we have ever met a crew member who has ever been grumpy (the supervisor - not our chap from the UK who seemed as bewildered as we were).

To cut it short, it was resolved (thanks to Rosemary the general manager who was very apologetic throughout) we stuffed our faces with carbs and cheese from the Pepper Market, unpacked and fell asleep. In our room, obviously, not in the restaurant, which is located in the Cabanas this year, not Casitas as it was last time.

It's now 6.52 am. Jeff's already been to the gym. I'm ready to rock, and we will be off for breakfast shortly then to a water park. Will start a new thread with daily reports.
