Myself and another mum are arranging the year 6 school prom for next year.
I am hoping to bake and decorate a cake for the evening, could I get some advice from you lovely people.

1, what icing do I need to cover the cake?
2, what icing do I need to make decorations?
3, what would be the best sponge recipe?
4, how far in advance could I bake the cake?

Thank you.

1. Depends what sort of cake you make.
2. See 1
3. I usually make madeira cake.
4. Don't know. :sorry:

Just for your info though - there is a fantastic cake decoration supply shop in Chichester that has all the icings in all the colours and tons of other cool bits. I go in there and go :mental:

For the icing you will need white fondant, the best type is Renshaw’s Regal Ice which you can get either mail order or from a cake decorating shop.

The circles and stripes you make with fondant again. You can buy ready coloured black which will probably be better as it is a true black. You can use black paste and colour the white but it takes a long time to knead the correct colour. If it was me, I’d buy ready coloured.

If you want silver, then the best option is to buy edible silver petal dust which you mix with rejuvenator liquid and then you paint it onto the icing.

For the stars I would use flower paste as this is supple to work with when you cut the shape out but they dry hard.

I always use a sponge recipe, if you don’t have one I can send it to you if you like.

With a sponge it can’t be made very far in advance – if you want it for Saturday then I would make it on Tuesday.

For that cake, you will need a think board exactly the same size as the cake and you will also need some dowels to go into the bottom cake to stop the top sinking into it.

Anything else I can help with let me know :)

The shop in Chichester sells black fondant. The ladies who work in there give brilliant advice too.

I can give you directions if you want.

I'll send it to you when I get home :)

For the cutters etc, you are best to shop around, as it is stars and circles, you may find it is cheaper to buy children's plastic playdough cutters  The other place to look is on ebay as a lot of the online shops have ebay stores as well and the prices are considerably cheaper.

I'll look through my books as well as I'm sure there is one that it similar and it will give you step by step instructions, but if you get stuck I can always talk you through it
