I am trying to re-create a photo like this tomorrow, we have a black backdrop sorted but I need to take this photo without flash.... I can do most of this in photoshop afterwards but obviously the closest I can get it without too much PS'ing would be great.

Well to get CLOSE... tripod, low iso, very directional light on the faces (dont let the light fall on the background at any time) remember that the meter will try and pull everything back to mid-tone grey so it'll try and fight you wanting most of your photo black. So you'll need to underexpose with trial and error really.
All else fails, get a couple of dark but not totally gone shots and some levels in photoshop along with some dodge/burn should get you pretty close
Am I supposed to UNDERSTAND what you just said, Keith?

But how great is it that with all the new super duper cameras, even camera phones, you can get many of these effects now without knowing a thing about the technical details?
