I recently asked a CM at the ride as to whereabouts the ring was located and he told me that the "ring" was actually only a locating point for one of the posts for the crowd barriers!

That is very true that it was indeed a hoax, but until they fixed it, it really did look like it could have been an imprint of a ring.
