Canadian mobile phones in the US

We're wanting to get a pair of mobile phones to use in the US, but we won't have a car until the second week of our holiday. However, we will have one in Canada the week before.
So, does anyone know if we bought a pair of phones in Canada if they'd work in America?

Im guessing they will work, but you would have to pay for roaming

Vikki, if you Google Canadian Cell Phones in the US there is a wealth of information but there is no simple answer.

can you buy them online and have them shipped to your hotel?

I take my unlocked iphone 4 with me and then buy a sim card before I leave. I then put some money on it so that is working as soon as we get there.

I haven't looked but I would think they do the same in Canada with sims. If you do it that way you will avoid roaming charges on the Canadian sim, that's if the sim has roaming on it.

What card are you planning on using?

That's what I was thinking. No ides how I'd go about that though :)

The thing is, I'm sure we could use our own UK phones but I don't want to worry about loosing it or breaking it.

We usually just buy them when we get there but we're not having a car till the second week.

Walmart allows you to pay by paypal online thus making it easier to ship things.... are you definitely going to need to use the phone to call? if just texts might be cheaper to just use your UK contract..

It will just be texts but I really don't want to take my phone. Wonder what'd happen if I got a couple of cheap pay and go ones here and use them there. Would that even work?

As long as the SIM card is set up for international should be fine.
