look away now or prepare to be really bored.

Just spent a few days at my parents. They live near Heathrow. We walked the dogs on Staines Moor which is about half a mile from the airport perimeter. I took photos of the planes taking off. I'm getting an anorak for Christmas.

Anyway these are my better efforts...

Those are the ones I didn't delete. A plane takes off or lands at Heathrow every 90 seconds - there were lots of planes. :D

I love planes. Me and mom would go to the airport and watch the planes take off and land when I was a little girl. They won't let you in the airport to do that now.

I blame my dad for making me an aircraft anorak too.

I spent many childhood holidays hanging out at Prestwick airport watching the laker planes etc in the late 70's and 80's and it was around the age of 8 while spending a day there with Dad, that I decided that was the industry I wanted to be in....... so no yawning from me Dawn honey, I love them..... they inspire me......

great shots, Dawn. Love watching planes myself..real shame you can no longer sit in Manchester to watch them..DS and I use to go all the time.

My nephew is a ATC at Heathrow and is a real airplane anorak :D

Your parents must live incredibly close to Heathrow Dawn. How do they handle the noise?

I too love airplanes. There is a place near National Airport here in DC called Gravelly Point. You can sit there all day and watch them come in and take off. You can even make a picnic of it if you like.

To be honest once you get used to it you hardly notice it. They are far enough away not to be affected by take off and landing noise. It's only if there are certain weather conditions that the planes fly directly over their house. I like laying in bed there and listening to the aircraft noise. I'd guess they are about 4 miles from terminal 4. The moor is right on the perimeter though. When I was a kid we sometimes just used to park up on the grass verge by the fence and watch the planes. You're not allowed to do that now.

I was once on the verge of applying to go through ATC training but then I wimped out. I can't imagine the stress of that job.

The Shoreham Airshow is next weekend. That's down the road from me. Might try and get a photo of a Spitfire. :D

My aunt and uncle live near Dover Airforce Base. One of the runways used to come up to the end of the road they lived on. So they had those big cargo planes flying over their house many, many time during the day...and night. I never slept well when I stayed there as a kid...:shocked025:
