When i went to the hospital to see the consultant on 28th August i was told there was no waiting list and that my op would be middle of october.I had my pre op assessment there and then and my MRSA screening so i would be ready.

I was told i'd get a letter with the date of my op and a date to see the surgeon to sign the consent form.

I still haven't heard anything so i rand today to chase it up.
The secretary left a message on my answerphone to say that no date had been set yet but it would probably be some time in December:mad:

They told me October which is what i have told work and planned for.
I am not going in over Christmas or being out of action over Christmas as it's mine and the kids favourite times.Being on my own with them means they won't have Christmas if i can't do anything.

I'm so cross and really upset and she has now left the office so i can't ring her until tomorrow.

Yikes! Sorry to hear about that, DB. :(

:hug2:

If it's elective surgery, can you schedule it after the first of the year if nothing is available sooner (not late November or December). Can you call the doctor's office back and explain the situation to the secretary? Work, single mother, children with no holiday if it's done at that time of year, etc.

If it isn't elective, let them know that it needs to be done quickly and that timing is imperative for those same reasons.

Not sure if it will make a difference, but it might! :fingers:

Awwww mate. You phone them back tomorrow and tell them about you and the kids and Christmas and you were told it would be October and all that. :hug2:

If they don't sort it out tell them you have a "connection" who will come down and tinsel their office.

I'm just so upset as i've been building myself up to it being October.Getting more stressed now that i've got to wait even longer.

I've cancelled my diary for the rest of the year and the kids have missed out on stuff that i could have booked as i knew i couldn't take them anywhere.

I've told work so they can arrange my timetable and have organised things so the kids can still get to their clubs while i can't drive.

There's no way i'm going in in December and missing out on enjoying Christmas with the kids.

What was the point of making me spend an hour in the hospital having my pre op assessment and MRSA screening if my op isn't until the end of the year as it will be out of date. They only did it because they said i'd be in within a few weeks.

If they can't get a flippin date right how can i trust them to give me the right operation.:(

I'm sorry to hear this matey. I sometimes wish they wouldn't give you these provisional dates because very rarely do the dates match with the eventual time your op happens. :hug1:

I'm not sure how it works there, DizneyBlonde, but perhaps when you explain to them that you've arranged everything around your stated October date they will be able to do something to accommodate that?

Sending :pixiedust: for good luck tomorrow.

Just got off the phone to Consultant's secretary.

I should never have been told middle of October as there is no hope of me having my op then unless there is a cancellation which is no good for me as i need some notice for work and to arrange things for the kids.

She said my 18 week deadline was up on 25th December but i told her there was no way i could be 'out of action' over Christmas as it just wasn't fair to the kids.

At the moment all she can do is give me a provisional date for 8/1/09 which could still change if the consultant decides to go on holiday!!!

That date is ok for me as i will be ok for the Christmas season for the kids and Robyn's birthday is 7th so i would be home for that too.
It will mean that i have 2 weeks Christmas holiday from work then go straight into 3 months recovery.

I am just so annoyed that i was told one thing and arranged my life around it to be told that i would have to wait another 2 months.
I won't hear anything now until the beginning of December so i just hope that the date stays the same now as if it gets much later i will be worried about being well for our holiday.

Thanks for being there guys.XXX

Well, it looks like you've done the best you can with the restrictions that have been placed on the operation schedule. :hug2:

It's really no different here. My Da has been through absolute hell schedule wise for the procedures and minor surgery he has recently had to have done. He got all the way to the hospital ready for one of the surgeries, and they didn't have him on the roster, so he couldn't have it done. What a mess.

When I was there for this most recent health issue (it's complex and taking time to treat) my Da didn't even know why he was being told to go to the hospital. When we got there and they checked him in, it was for something none of us were prepared to hear. when I questioned it, they checked again (checked WHAT??) and said, oh no. That was a mistake. He got up on the floor and they STILL didn't know why he was there or what they were supposed to be doing for him. That's when I got pretty testy and said that he wasn't going anywhere (they were trying to move him to another floor for another type of procedure) until SOMEONE gave us specific information regarding the Doctor's orders and what exactly was to happen. That shook some info and sense loose...but that particular day was very trying. It didn't get any better with succesive steps in his treatment regime.

So, all that to say, it's really no different here. (Although I will say, I believe the UK system is much better organized when it comes to the actual treatment of illness).

Fundamentally we have an awesome health care system. Consultants however, are a law to themselves. Schedule a full day of consultations 6 months in advance and they wake up on that day and fancy a round of golf instead...

How does a consultant differ from a doctor? It it a specialist?

I think that holds very true here, Dawn. You can have an appointment for anything and have it canceled for any number of reasons. :sigh; One of the things that drives me bonkers is the inability to make an appointment at many labs. You end up having to show up at opening and waiting and waiting and waiting... no consideration for diabetics who are fasting, children who are sick...

I've finally found a lab that will do appointments.
