Airline staff who left derogatory comments about passengers on social networking site Facebook are being investigated by their bosses.
British Airways check-in staff based at Gatwick have posted messages saying that travellers are 'smelly' and that operations at Heathrow's Terminal 5 are 'shambolic'.
A spokesman for the airline yesterday described the comments as 'disappointing' and 'unwise' and pledged to deal with those responsible.
The latest blow to the international reputation of the British airline industry follows a public furore over remarks left by Virgin Atlantic cabin crew, which led to 13 staff being dismissed last week.
In the latest incident, one BA staff member called 'Suely' created a Facebook discussion board entitled 'Things that irritate you more when working on check-in', on which 13 complaints were listed.
The writer hit out at passengers who 'put a boarding pass in their mouth and then hand it back to you; were smelly (first thing in the morning on a 5 o'clock shift); are running late and breathing in your face; and asking for a complimentary upgrade'. Another BA colleague called 'Deepa' referred to American customers' ' stupid accents'.
Other pages set up by BA workers mocked the airline's chief executive Willie Walsh and included a video in which a band sings about ' what a disaster' Terminal 5 is.
A group page entitled 'Bring long hauls back to Gatwick' says staff there have been 'forgotten' as BA has moved all the longhaul flights that it 'legally could' to Heathrow.
It adds: 'This group is to try and get Willie Walsh, for once, to listen to the staff.
'LGW has the capacity and staff willing and able to take on more longhaul routes.
'Cabin Crew are leaving faster than Dawn French from a Weight Watchers meeting because they simply don't get paid enough.
'BA has four new 777s due to be delivered in January 2009. Whilst they have purchased slots to use them at Heathrow, they simply don't have the capacity or the room - despite T5 being open.
'Operations there are shambolic - luggage is lost, no BA flights ever leave on time, and virtually all flights are coached to remote stands.'
The airline will be under pressure to sack those who posted the comments, after Virgin Atlantic dismissed staff who described passengers as 'chavs' and made allegations about the standard of equipment.
