Took the boy to Arundel Castle on Saturday and Daddy came too. The weather was foul but it was the last weekend before the castle closed for the winter so we grinned and beared it and had a great time.

Tip: those well dressed guides standing around the rooms are a mine of information, just ask. I know all about the 4th Duke of Norfolk and his ghost now. :)

This castle is actually lived in by the current Duke of Norfolk and his family. It was slightly surreal seeing 600 year old paintings next to family photos of the kids on the beach.

Anyway. Outside the castle.

Sheep in the moat.

The young knight in the restaurant after a piece of apple pie. Behind him there is a gorgeous open fire. So toasty we could have spent all day there.

We're right up on top of the Keep now. See the young knight twanging the bad guys?

Unfortunately he escapes and gets kitted out in the castle gift shop.

Claire I think it opens again in March. It's a wicked cool place to run around in. You're not allowed to take photos inside the castle rooms but it is beautiful in there. Steven pronounced the Library "magnificent" much to the amusement of everyone else in there.

And they have two flat lions in front of the fireplaces in the banqueting hall.

Did the young knight not enjoy his apple pie? He is giving you a face.

The castle is very cool! I can't beleive people live there. I wouldn't want to see the heating bill!

There are a grand total of none actually in Arundel.

I want to live in a castle and shoot every man who dare try to storm the doors....

Tink

Only shoot? I would think living in a castle would provide inspiration for those ancient actions like boiling in oil and the like. :D

Dawn

Yep Arundel has oil chutes.* :evil:And lots of arrow slits. And that's after you've got up the great big hill.

Cool pics! My American husband was fascinated by the castle where we live... to me I see it almost everyday... it took an outsider to make me realise what we have here really.

and past the killer sheep

They did have a sinister bleat about them.

Apparently they are a very rare breed and are kept at the castle to keep the moat clear of scrub and stuff. One of those guides that no one talks to told me - you have to talk to these people they know some amazing stuff and they do it all for free.
