View Full Version : Hypothetical question

You are the headmistress of a school that needs to appoint a learning support assistant. You place an advert stating that applicants must have an NVQ qualification.

Now you get an application from someone who does not have an NVQ. They have 6 credits from a course that could be used toward an NVQ. They have a 1st class honors degree. They have about 60 hours of unpaid classroom time in your school and have done lots of other little jobs around the school.

But no NVQ.

How seriously would you take this application?

Initially I would think with the degree that you were over qualified but with the unpaid hours and odd jobs around the school I can't see why the application isn't as good, if not better than the rest

Britchick

i would say that your honours degree exceeded the level of the NVQ in educational terms but if I had to shortlist 30 candidates and others had the relevant NVQ then i would probably not select the degree candidate for interview. Unless they had loads of experience etc. It all depends how many applications they have and how strict the criteria for shortlisting. I would say apply for it Dawn, you have nothing to lose and if you get to interview you'll have it nailed.

And if nothing else the interview experience in this field will be invaluable

In my experience, a help wanted ad is a wish list of all the things they want in an applicant. Most times it is flexible unless there is some sort of licensing issue.

Britchick

with a local authority they will have a list of essential and desirable qualifications/experience. They will often discard any applications that don't meet the essential criteria.

I don't know whether to bother. Yep it's for a job at Steven's school but it's only temporary for one term. I know they will have a stack of applications for it.

Maybe not that many. Only temporary for one term will put alot of people off. Go for it Dawn. You have nothing to lose.

I already have a local authority application form on the lappie - I just taylor it to each job I apply for. :D

I'd definatley consider it... espeically if I knew the person applying :) Grab the head and have a chat (although not too fiercly... they'll get veryyyy annoyed and probably not want to give you a job if you go around grabbing people)

lizbro
10-11-2008, 08:57 PM
When i went for my job i was half way through my NVQ and the job stated you must have it -still got the job-its something to do with everyone who works with children now should get the NVQ2 -although you could say that you're quite happy to do it.you could do it with your eyes shut if you are a mum!!!

11-11-2008, 12:10 PM
Well I was in school today tidying books in the library and the head came in to see how I was getting on and she said...

"you know we have some temporary vacancies don't you"

Me: "yes but I don't have an NVQ"

Head: "that doesn't matter, you've done some training and you're always in here and we all know you - put a form in"

*faints*

I have to fill in a form now. Mustn't disobey headteacher.

Shall we use the special glitter crayons?

Did she wink as she mentioned temp vacancys. Do it Dawn. Think of all you can buy in Walmart.

Dawn
11-11-2008, 04:27 PM
Well it would only be 3 months and it is definitely temporary but the money would top up the Disney fund nicely.

Will sit down tomorrow and do form with special glittery crayons. I may sign it in luminous crayon too to make it extra special.

Anything else before I seal the envelope?

Dawn
12-11-2008, 01:57 PM

One of those little gidget things that plays a tune when you open the card - It's A Small World.

Beccaberry

I've just read through this whole thread...

We are quite peculiar sometimes.

Skywatcher
12-11-2008, 02:09 PM
After youve added all that the only thing left to do would be erm..... burn it I suppose and do a boring one ;)

Dawn
12-11-2008, 02:13 PM
But then it would be the same as everyone elses. I need to stand out. :D

Apart from that, I think this one is particularly flammable. Hmmm, maybe I should put a warning on it.

Johnie
12-11-2008, 02:13 PM
Is she going to open the envelope and get glittery stuck all over herself and her office? If she doesn't like that sort of thing, you could be in trouble :p015:

Dawn
12-11-2008, 02:17 PM
Well she does encourage the kids to go for it when they are doing arts and crafts...
