if an airline changes the flight time by a few hours but it's not really convenient, where do you stand?

I'd guess you need to read the small print of your booking first.

Depends on who you book with. When Airtran changes flight times, you can change to a different time for free. I've been able to change to the day before I'd originally booked for.

As near to the gate as possible.

if it is a small change in flight time, then we have to suck it up ......if it is a major change and IF they have an alternative flight the same day which is better suited, most airlines will allow you to change to that flight.

If it is more than 6hrs then you can typically cancel with a full refund.
