My Nana is very poorly after a serious stroke. She has been in a nursing home since 2000 with vascular dementia. She's not drinking or eating because she's unable to swallow, we don't want her to go to hospital because she gets so distressed. She lives a long way away (cornwall) and i'm just deciding whether to hot foot it down there tomorrow. Can you help by praying or whatever your bag is for peace for her. Thank you x

Ach, Brit. :( It's so darn hard to know what is best to do, isn't it? :( If you do go, please be so very careful driving, ok? It's a bad time of year, all 'round to be on the roads, especially if you have to go alone.

The tough old birds are the incredible ones in this world. :hug2:

I hope it all ends up very positive for your Nana, and for you. :hug2:

i don't know what to do. She had a very comfortable night, has been taking some thickened fluids and even tried to communicate with the carers.

I have a nightmare at work- haven't been able to get in yet because of dealing with phone calls, loads of carers off sick so have used all our back up carers. Someone has just had an accident too (not serious thank god) but they are off the road. Looks like i will be donning my apron and gloves today, that's how bad it is so i can't just screw work because other people's nans are relying on us to provide a service. Mine is being looked after very well and hasn't recognised me in over 5 years. There's also the weather and noone wants me to go on my own.

I'm going to see how things go today and review tomorrow morning. I wish she lived nearer, i'd be there everyday. thanks again guys for your kind words guys :hug2:

Julie you are a truly lovely person and it must have been a very hard decision to make when there are so many other Nans who also need you.
Where would the world be without people like you to look after them all and put them before yourself.
You know the offer is always there for you to stay if you need to and there are plenty of :hug2: for you here.

You are making good decisions, Brit. :hug2: Only you know what you have to deal with at work, and how that critical work you do affects so many others.

Your Nan is safe, and that is the key factor. As you love and care for your "patients" you are expressing your love and care for your Nan. Not physically being there really is of no moment in this situation. :hug2:

You'll keep track of her status, and that is what you do for her right now. It matters, and it makes a difference to those who truly care about you.

I'm a little worried for you. I know how much you give; how much you care about your family and friends. Please, take some time for yourself in all this, ok? Even if it's only for a few minutes doing one small thing you like. A bath? Read in peace? Whatever little relaxing thing you like to do... give yourself a little space from all the emotional stressors.

Take care and know that we are all thinking of you and sending our very best wishes for all to remain positive for you. :hug2:

Glad your Nan had a comfortable night, Julie. My thoughts and prayers are with her.

You're making good decisions in a very difficult situation--and helping others less fortunate with family to care for their loved ones.

Please take a little time for yourself at some point each day. Even if it's just a few minutes center yourself and recharge your batteries.

she is much the same today, thanks for asking. Part of me doesn't want her to die but the other part knows that her quality of life is terrible. But then i feel guilty for wishing her to pass away. I hope noone thinks i'm bad for that.
There doesn't seem to be any justice in this world when a baby (i'm thinking of the siamese twin that has just died during the operation to separate it from it's twin) dies and someone who has had their life and just wants to be at peace doesn't. I now know where i get my spirit from and until her last day she will be a fighter, you've got her to blame for me

I have been speaking to Mum about all the good times, particularly christmas and about the time she drank too much wine at her golden wedding anniversary and ending up being sick. That was very amusing, apparently she had indigestion

anyway time will tell, i can't tell you again what a support you all are. thank youx

Well the funeral is now planned, its on the 31st at 11.30am. I have been asked to read a poem, i've never been one for standing in front of people and reading let alone where there is the emotion of a funeral.

This is what i'm going to read, I'm sure you'll be familiar with it.

Do not stand at my grave and weep.

I am not there. I do not sleep.

I am a thousand winds that blow.

I am the diamond glints on snow.

I am the sunlight on ripened grain.

I am the gentle autumn rain.

When you awaken in the morning's hush,

I am the swift uplifting rush

of quiet birds in circled flight.

I am the soft stars that shine at night.

Do not stand at my grave and cry.

I am not there; I did not die.
