Bootcamping Linux

Is it possible to install a linux OS on a MacOSX system using bootcamp?

I'm really wanting to give linux ago, so thought using bootcamp would be the way to go.

Apparently you can but it's not easy. Try installing Ubuntu and check out this article.

or you could just try vmware or parallels... much much easier although a few dollars if you choose to buy

it depends on your motives for having one really? I mean you have macosx so you have a nice unix machine already with access to great apps. Linux is not as good on the desktop yet (in my opinion) so the question would be, whatcha wanna do with it that you cant do on your mac?

Now.. .if you want to learn linux, how to install it, how to install apps on it and maybe get further into php etc. which would be useful for your web business then yeah! it would be useful for you to know LAMP stuff for sure.

Well you already have a unix machine but you can't get "inside" that as much as you could with linux so if that's what you want to do then yes have one. :D

LOL, I am just really curious as to how they work ect. I'd like to do it just to try it and see if it has any advantages over Windows. Plus it is always going to be advantageous in the long run to know as much as I can if I decide to go into ICT as a career... Still not sure what to do with that

The more experience that you get with different operating systems and how they work the better. Very few people have an understanding of what a computer is actually doing when you ask it to open a webpage or print a picture. This basic understanding is essential for troubleshooting computing issues. Understanding the way that different O/S interact with the hardware will be a definite help. VMWare is very straightforward to use - you should be able to get the various systems up and running with a little patience.

But for a true geek the only O/S is CP/M (showing my age now!)

If you were REALLY old, you could reminisce about working on computers that didn't even have an OS per se. Like the first one I programmed for... the IBM 1401. :biggrin:

Tom - punch cards is as far back as I go. If only we could go back to the good old black magic days - things were much simpler for us geeks then!


Ubuntu is very good. One of the best things about Linux O/S is that they are very compact. Ubuntu will actually run from the installation CD - so you can have a usuable system just by booting from a CD.

Funnily enough, our college refectory sells fairtrade cola named ubuntu.. It's not very nice but I always buy it because it's fair trade, and I feel bad buying normal cola when they sell that stuff.
