London clay Mari - gives the effect of brown water. The Thames is actually a lot cleaner these days than it has been.

it is, apparently, the cleanest (or one of the cleanest i can't remember which) river in Europe. The colour of it is all the mud and stuff being dragged up from the bottom as it's a fast running tidal river.
