My Mum gave us her old PC and I've just got it up and running but MS works appears to have DIS-appeared!
I know it used to be there as I've used it - I just called Mum and she doesn't know what's happened to it...she could have deleted it accidentally but she doesn't know.
Any ideas where to look for it?

first look in add and remove programs and see if its still listed if it is do a search for *.wps files and try and open one if its there it will open
if you have word 2007, wps files and no works installed it will open in word

Really - I thought if it were XP she might be able to do a system restore to a save point prior to MS works deletion

vista has it too and good point matey boy, but first you only need to check add and remove :) no need to do a restore just yet was going to suggest it after what i said, was doing it in stages

not on add or remove - i checked that already.
it's XP
Hmm, could well have been removed at some point if it is not in the add/remove programs list.
Chances are you are going to have to install Works or Office again assuming you have a copy of that available. If you have another computer with Works or Office on it, you could copy the .wps files over and open them on the other machine.
Alternativley you could download OpenOffice.org, which is a completley free office suite, from here: http://www.openoffice.org/
OpenOffice.org (often shortened as OOo) can open many document types including Works (.wps), Word Documents (.doc) etc...
Hope that helps, good luck :)

ermmm. On the laptop I have microsoft word on my desktop, and i know i have excel somewhere as i had to open a file in it that had been emailed to me - although I'm not sure how i did it, just a good guess i think!
DS just did system restore on the pc but it's still not there - he has wordpad on it which he says he's happy to use for typing up homework.
the other thing i was thinking of is that tucked away in the deep dark depths of some storage place, the whereabouts of which at this moment in time i am unsure about, i have a thing called Lotus Smartsuite which is a similar type of thing but it's very very very old so I'm not sure if it will work.
today we were also given an old pc by my neighbour for the boys to mess about on - it's actually better than the one we got rid of! anyway, DS9 has played a couple of games i installed on it for him and is now complaining that it doesn't have powerpoint as he wants to make a slideshow!

ok for home work id leave lotus alone, i doub tthe school would have anything on their systems from them these days....wordpad is ok for basic word processing but there isnt any formatting tools on it tbh
well go to add and remove and see if ms office is on there, not sure, search for *.doc for word files *.xls for excel, *.pub for publisher *.ppt for powerpoint files and double click on one to see if it opens if it does you have the program installed

no probs anytime M :D
What about using Windows Explorer and doing a search for all folders and files, including programs and hidden files?
It can take a while, depending on what's loaded on the computer and the speed, but you definitely will know what is on the hard drive!

Yeah, definitely leave the Lotus stuff alone. It is very antiquated.
