Thank you guys for being concerned - I am fine! About equally distant between the floods up north and the fires down south. :sorry: If we could just tip the county on its side.

I have been moved to tears watching people who've lost their homes in the bushfires and as I wake up this morning the death toll stands at 108 - it's just horrific. :hug2: The worst bushfire disaster ever and that's really saying something.

Spare a thought for them all today. :hug2:

No need for concern for me! The fires are about 1300km/800miles south and the floods about the same distance north - so I am no danger!

Death toll now stands officially at 131 - but it is growing hourly. :sorry:

I can't believe it, here the sun is shining the birds are singing and yet so many of my fellow Aussies have lost so much. The Victorian Premier nearly lost his own parents, so no-one can say he doesn't have some idea what they're going through.

Our Deputy Prime Minister was just about in tears with the speech she gave to Parliament today.

Just awful. :sorry:

Missed a lot of this while i was in hospital and Mum kept it from me too but my Uncle (Mum's brother) lives in Springvale which by looking at google maps i have worked out at being only 40/50 miles away from Wandong which was on the news this morning.

Very sad watching the footage.

Prayers for everyone in Australia and special thoughts for Uncle Eric,Aunty Ruth and family.I know some of their friends and extended family have had to leave their homes :(

This is the most scary of it all. What sort of person wants to bring this scale of destruction.

From here http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2009/02/10/2486809.htm

Several blazes are threatening homes across Victoria, and despite a cool change wind continues to hamper efforts to bring the fires under control.
Four-thousand firefighting crews from every state and territory are continuing to battle the fires.

And it's not just the human cost either, as crushingly tragic as that is.

How much of the bush has been destroyed and at what cost to the plants and animals living there. For Australia's unique ecosystem it could be catastrophic. :furious:

DB did you make contact with your family ok?

I had an email form my Uncle and my parents have spoken to him.

They know a lot of people who have been affected directly and some have lost everything.
My cousin was evacuated from her house but as the roads were closed couldn't go anywhere and had to sit it out and hope for the best.

A local wildlife park had it's endangered species moved out but couldn't save all of the animals as there were just too many to find homes for.
No one has been able to go back and see how things are there yet.

My Uncle is a church minister so is working very closely with the church and comminity to do what he can.

He just wants us all to keep them in our prayers.

I'm very glad you've heard from them, DB - and that they are safe! Your poor cousin!

About a million animals are thought to have been killed. :sorry: They managed to evacuate all the animals at Healesville sanctuary but some of the smaller ones didn't have all the resources to move everyone quickly.

I went to Healesville on a school field trip in <year edited to protect my age> when we lived in Melbourne. Hearing about that really personalised it.
