I am a firefox junkie on both mac and windows, but Internet explorer 8 was released today (according to MSN news) I am just in the process of downloading it now so I will let you know what I think...

Download Link HERE (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/internet-explorer/default.aspx)

Ive been using it for a while on windows 7 and it's the best IE yet in my opinion (although I admit that's not saying a whole load :) but yeah, they've certainly worked hard on it

I have the downloaded beta thing for windows 7 but never got round to installing it. Is it much of an improvement on vista?

Would you say it rivals unix systems? I have heard a few say they prefer it over MasOSX.

Well I'm a unix guy right, so I start off biased in any such discussion. However, MACOSX is the only modern Unix which has a decent GUI in my opinion (other folks like the linux ones but I can only speak for myself can't I ;)

So I like UNIX on servers but have rarely been happy with it on a modern desktop before Macosx.

So is it a better DESKTOP than most unix systems? undoubtedly
Is it a better desktop than macosx? debateable. It's *different* and macosx has snow leopard out in June which will move things further on there.

All that can be said I feel is that windows 7 is what vista SHOULD have been. It's better performance wise, it's FAR less annoying and there are a lot of really nice enhancements.

Which one do I hope wins out long term? I have to say MACOSX but windows 7 will give it a real run for its money

Thanks Keith :D Tbh I think a lot of the mac vs windows (Vista aside... and perhaps XP too...) is personal preference, too. I agree about the linux GUI. It reminds me of those flash-based OS immitations they have on certain websites.

definitely personal preference that's for sure! and competition is good

To that end, I'd LOVE a decent linux GUI and some killer apps. The ubuntu guys are really trying and I think they finally "get it" so fingers crossed there'll be some competition from that quarter perhaps next year

hmmmmm will have to check this out thx josh

i installed Linux on my spare PC and took it straight off, it looked really cheap and nasty and not very professional on first glances, so I'm sticking to a dual booting XP/Vista setup for the foreseeable future. i still wanna try and locate a decent 2nd use macbook tho :D

I am actually really pleased with I.E 8. Not sure I'll switch from firefox, but it is a lot better. Feels much more 'solid' than the old one... which always seemed plasticy to me.

Installed I.E. 8 on my laptop (Vista) today. Haven't had time to check it out but first glance didn't notice any difference.
