View Full Version : What's the moral of the story?

13-04-2009, 03:04 PM
My brother Steve is a carpenter. Last Monday he cut his knee. It got a bit sore but he left it. He's male, they don't like to make a fuss. On Friday his knee ballooned with infection. He couldn't get upstairs because of the pain. On Saturday Lisa offered to take him to the saturday surgery at their doctors. He said no it will be alright till Tuesday when normal surgeries open again. He turns up at my parents yesterday for Steven's party looking grey in colour and hardly able to walk. My dad took him to the local walk-in centre where they looked at him and told him to go to the nearest A & E. Dad drives him another 20 miles and drops him off. Two hours later we get a phone call - he's been admitted to the assessment ward for observation. Today he is still in there hooked up to intravenous anti-biotics awaiting a scan to see if the infection has penetrated any bone. He has to stay in at least one more night too and they are threatening to cut open his knee to drain it.

The moral of the story??

1 - if you cut it, clean it!!!

2 - if it starts to look wrong - go to the doctor now, not next week.

PS - I'll be uploading photos of the day later. There are no photos of Uncle Steve. :slap:

Oh for heaven's sake! :cry2:

Anyone mentioning tetanus? :(

13-04-2009, 03:40 PM
Well actually he had a tetanus a couple of months ago when he impailed a nail in the same knee.

13-04-2009, 03:42 PM
At least he's covered for that. Let's hope the mxs work and he's not in for a miserable course. :sigh:

I am not going to say much about his delaying though. I am the worst when it comes to putting off medical care. :( We won't even talk about dental, ok? :sorry: :spring:

Keeping fingers crossed for a speedy recovery! Not pretty I'm sure.

I am bad about going to the docs too, so I will also keep my mouth shut. :D

13-04-2009, 05:17 PM
eww, that sounds horrible - i hope it gets better soon.

Bit of an update.

Infection has not reached the bone and the lab has confirmed it's a severe case of cellulitis. Still needs to stay in for a while but he's a lot brighter today.

14-04-2009, 04:35 PM

14-04-2009, 04:36 PM
well, that's 'sort of' good news....it could have been a lot worse! Dawn, do you think this hospital stay may have been avoided altogether if he'd gone to the docs when it happened?

14-04-2009, 04:54 PM
Almost certainly. Cellulitis is routinely treated with oral anti-biotics from your gp.

One lesson learned I think.

14-04-2009, 05:26 PM
Men and " Oh l'll be fine". Glad to hear it's good news Dawn.

14-04-2009, 05:29 PM
great news!

so glad its nothing more serious

14-04-2009, 06:52 PM
Good grief - men eh?!
Im so glad it wasnt anything too serious - lets hope he's learned alot from this!!

14-04-2009, 07:41 PM
Thank goodness it wasn't more serious!

15-04-2009, 08:03 AM
Just reading this update. Cellulitis is no picnic, but no infection in the bone is the best news. I hope he recovers fast, poor guy. :( :pdust: :pdust:

15-04-2009, 12:54 PM
My grandad had cellulitis- He ended up with maggots or leeches on his feet! Fingers crossed for a fast recovery with no leeches involved!

15-04-2009, 01:07 PM
Good news that there is no infection in the bone - wishing a speedy recovery and a lesson well and truly learned!

15-04-2009, 07:07 PM
OMG...been there done that..but it was my finger, and it WAS cleaned by the lady that worked where I worked. Next morning I woke up and my finger was swollen to triple it's normal size and there were red streaks working its way up my arm!
SOOOO brother dear...clean those wounds QUICK QUICK QUICK.
Dawn, you're right..he's a guy.

He's still in hospital. The infection is receding but his knee is still rock hard. The doctor expects Steve to be in hospital for another week.

Yikes! I'll bet he's going stir crazy in there by now.

18-04-2009, 04:31 PM
He's certainly paying the price :sorry: Another week in hospital is no joke.

18-04-2009, 04:40 PM
Oh and he says that a young woman was admitted in the week with severe cellulitis - from shaving her legs.

Be warned.

18-04-2009, 06:22 PM
gosh, they don't keep em in for nothing now!

so are you advocating hairy legs then Dawn  not sure i'm ready for the european look yet

18-04-2009, 10:16 PM
Hairy legs. Cooool. :D

Another week? Wow. That is pretty scary. Rock hard knee? Is that still infection then?

Hey, if someone has cellulitis because of shaving, can't hammer poor Steven too bad for his cut. :(

19-04-2009, 01:12 AM
Okay, so this whole hairy leg thing could happen if we (as in the women) all stuck together. But if that one woman sneeks out and shaves then we'll have to go back. I'm all for it.

Anytime spent in the hospital is no fun!
