This is one for the mac fans amongst us

I currently have a rather wonderful last generation alu macbook pro. It's great, flawless, wonderful etc.

The new ones have an all in one body shell, a glossy screen, bit faster, new keyboard which I'm not sure if I like as much hmmmmm

BUT I've just realised that my macosx developer discount runs out soon and it's 20-25% on a system so it's a bit of a waste not to spend it. Now I could get a lovely imac but it'd be slower than my several years old mac pro :/ I could upgrade my mac pro but even at several years old, I don't really feel the need! (that's macs for you!)

So do I use the discount to upgrade the mbp :/ I'm undecided because Im just not sure about that new keyboard

Keith,

I don't know for sure which MBP you've got but my older model 17" MBP is still going strong. Can see no reason to replace it.

I think, if I were in your position, I'd just grab a 24" iMac and be done with it. I'd hate to let the discount expire and not use it. Besides... all that screen real estate! Be able to run xcode, ib, instruments and still see your email. All without Spaces! What a deal!

Tom (:macwave:... who wishes he had Keith's discount)

It's the one with the alu keys rather than the little black ones and really is perfect. 2006 model I guess.

that's my thought too. The 24" imac whilst not the most powerful machine in the world is absolutely beautiful

It's only the ADC discount Tom. 1 system a year at a nice price but as you say, it seems a shame to waste it

I think one of the reasons i haven't made the leap to macs is that a lot of the astro software isnt compatible

I just think you might be dissapointed with an iMac after using the macpro... it is a stunning machine but the mac pro is just so much better and faster etc.

I have the lowest spec iMac and I don't find it at all slow.

Another option is to buy the MBP, sell your old one, and buy a 30" apple cinema display for your mac pro?! That way... you get a new MBP AND the big screen that you would get with the iMac?

Or of course you could do the obvious. I'm surprised I have to point it out!

You can buy ME the new macbookpro that I've been desperately needing for years and years. Sheesh!

Keith,

:geekon:

I'm a little confused about the performance quotes we're bandying about here. If your Macbook Pro is like mine (2.16Gz Core Duo, 667 MHz Bus), the newer iMacs (24") can have up to a 3.06GHz Core 2 Duo with a 1066 MHz Bus. Also, they've got the 7200 RPM drives in them as standard.

Seems a pretty reasonable performance upgrade over our Macbooks to me. Especially with a bit of a discount.

Okay, :geekon: off!
(I tried to use html "geek" tags but it wouldn't work)

Tom (:macwave:... or have I just lost what remains of my mind this morning?)

tis all true indeed Tom, but the slight complication is that my desktop is a first gen mac pro with two dual core 2.66 Xeons inside so in a way, an imac would be a downgrade for the desktop :( but but but it looks so nice

Ahhh... didn't get the bit about your "current desktop"! Thought we were only talking about a replacement for the Macbook Pro.

And yes, that would be a bit of a downgrade. :lipwobble:

I know the sensible thing to do is realise that everything I have is perfectly adequate for the job in hand and not buy anything else but but but

Personally, I fail to see a problem with that!

Unless the Steve Jobs photo is actually a painting on velvet. I might draw the line there. :mental:

ah but but but the iphone is just not a texters phone! V3 is better because landscape mode gives me a larger keyboard but still it's not ideal

I must be the only person that doesn't like the landscape keyboard on the touch/iPhone!

Keith
25-03-2009, 09:17 PM
Well it depends, I don't use it generally but if there's a website that fits more nicely into it then it's handy. + in the version 3 software the landscape for texting is nice because the keyboard is larger and so easier to hit the letters
