Tuesday 14th/Wednesday 15th April

Granny collected us for our few days in Ireland at 7pm, after driving for around an hour we hit rain - lots of rain.

It was very heavy rain and poor Granny had to drive through it for a loooong time. After a couple of wrong turns due to roadworks, bad road signs and too much rain we arrived at Pembroke Harbour at 12.30am Weds morning.

Luckily it had dried up by then so when we boarded at around 2am and settled down in our cabin (eventually....after the boys had stopped jumping around on the bunks!) we were extremely pleased to hear the Captains voice telling us the crossing should be a pleasant and comfortable one - phew! :worship:

Fits and bursts of sleep for the next 4 hours and we 'came alongside' at Rosslare harbour at 6.45am. we were off and at Bill and Anns by 7am for a lovely cooked breakfast which was very welcome after all those hours.

Hang on in there for part 2 with pics!

I unpacked, the boys played around in the garden and Grannny went up for a couple of hours sleep. It was cold, wet and windy - what's new?!

After lunch we had a trip to the beach, down some rickety wooden steps - well, when i say we, i mean the boys. I got 1/2 way down the steps and decided i wasn't going any further - I just took photos instead!

Weds 15th cont.

After that we headed for Forth Mountain, up and down some muddy bumpy roads to the Marion Grotto, spotting the satellite towers on the way. We walked up the hill to the grotto and said a prayer for Granny and Grandpas health and happiness then the boys climbed on some rocks.

On the way back down DS9 said "Mum, what's wealth?"

" It usually means you're rich" i said "Why do you ask?"

"Well you said a prayer for Granny and Grandpas wealth up there"

Perhaps i should have done that as well.......!

We popped in to see my Aunty and Uncle on the way back to the house where we had dinner, showers and settled down for the evening listening to the thunder and lightening storm going on outside!

Thurday 16th part 1

Another cold, windy and rainy start to the day. There seems to be a weather theme to our Ireland trips don't you think!

We were a bit tired this morning so pottered around the house, and Matthew went for a walk around the vegetable plot with Bill.

After lunch we headed out to a place called The White Hole then on to Cullenstown to show the boys the very tasteful 'Shell House' and they explored the beach there.

Thursday 16th part 2

We then headed over to Ballyheally Beach which has a random boulder plonked in the sea, and the boys collected some cool stones/rocks. On the way back we stppoed at a village called Wellington Bridge for ice creams which were eaten by the river, and then again for pick and mix sweets at the shop in Killinick which is where Bill and Ann live.

The boys went off on their traditional 'collecting golf balls' trip with Bill after which we had a lovely roast dinner and sat in the garden room with the woodburner going.

the owner - they even put them over the plant pots.......wonder where they got them all from, it might be right above the beach but i'm sure they couldn't have found that many on the sand - mind you, they've been doing it for over 20 yrs i think!

More rain and another morning spent pottering after which we did a bit of shopping then went to the sand dunes at Curracloe.

The boys enjoyed messing around here as much as they did last year, getting covered from head to toe in sand and bringing piles of the stuff back home in their shoes and pockets!

Back at the house they waded in the stream and played football, then we all had a Chinese take out for dinner.

they'd dug holes to lay their heads in so we couldn't see them! I said we should send DH a text and tell him there were 2 headless bodies on the sand dunes!

thank you :hug2:

the village which is a 10 minute walk from Bill and Anns house has a pub/restaurant, a farm/coffee shop (delicious food though quite expensive - a real treat though), another pub, petrol station with quite a comprehensive grocery store and post office, a small take out (burgers/chips i think - never been there) so all your requirements could be met there.

A drive of around 10 mins in one direction will take you to the Rosslare Harbour area with a supermarket, various grocery smaller stores, pubs, restaurants.

Then from the village another 10 minutes or so in the other direction takes you into Wexford town with a mix of smaller stores and high street chain stores housed in new and old buildings - a real mixture.

They have also built large supermarkets and industrial areas.....a sign of change i guess but i find it quite a shame.

I've always found Ireland to be fairly expensive for shopping although you can pick up some things for a reasonable price, at the moment we're pretty much on the same level with the exchange rates although we noticed this time that some groceries may be slightly cheaper at home..

Tink
21-04-2009, 02:57 PM
We found Ireland fairly expensive too, but just thought that was the case in that are of the world overall.

They had just switched from the punt to the Euro when we were there, so it was a little confusing overall. The exchange was a bit better (for us) too. Almost dollar for Euro, so that wasn't bad at all!

you're fairly unlikely to get lots of bargains there that's for sure!

Woohoo! It was a beautiful day! The sun was shining and it was lovely and warm.

Granny and I popped into town early to pick up some bits and pieces to bring back home, then came back to collect the boys. After a quick cuppa we took the boys to Meylers bar and restaurant for lunch, you may remember the place from last year with the windmill? We had lunch in the snug then wandered outside in the sunshine for a while. Ahhhh, lovely.

Saturday 18th<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> part 3

After a while we drove further on to Carne along a wibbly wobbly path alongside where the lake turns a corner.

Here, many years ago - maybe 16 or 17, a hippy family bought up a small village which was in ruins and they told us how they planned to refurbish the 5 houses for themselves and their young children to live in when they were older.

They seemed to be all done, or at least most of them were, but the place is deserted. Nobody knows why or where they’ve gone…….

At the end of the wibbly wobbly lane is a wibbly wobbly path leading to a beach where we saw 3 men fishing. The path had lots of deep potholes and the boys thoroughly enjoyed running along in front of the car guiding Granny past them!

All too soon it was time to go back to the house for tea and to pack the car.

DS9 went with Bill to collect golf balls one last time then we all had a piece of choccy cake and a cuppa before setting off to bed ready for an early start in the morning.

Arrived at Pembroke Dock at around 1pm and we had a petrol and lunch stop en route, making it home around 7pm, all very tired and all in need of a nice warm shower to freshen us up!

alas, that's no Disney countdown - it's just me keeping an eye on the days for something else!

I hear Ireland calling me back. Donna has never been there. I've been once for 7 days and spent it driving from Rosslare out west and back again.

:mental: Yeah! Photos! Very nice.

Kinda weird about the hippie houses and sad.

Boy that fisherman looked pretty serious. What happened to people holding their own pole?

Lovely buildings too!

Though seriously, the pole was being held by a stand, that's not fishing.

ahh but when you're sitting there all day your arms would surely get tired from holding that fishing rod!

i knew i shouldn't look through them again....now i'm aching to go back! My sister and i were talking, she said she thought we may move out there as we'd planned to many years ago before family came along.....the boys aren't too happy with the thought, i guess they just like the holidays!

i'm not sure i would move over there now even if we could afford it, but i'd love to have a place for getting away from it all!

I was racing through the boards last night trying to catch up and my fingers hit the "post" button too early for my last comment....I've been away too long....

Meant to say I've never been to Ireland (well, other than Dublin!), but the gorgeous beaches remind me so much of the beaches we went to in my childhood in Northumberland (for those not in the UK that's the North East coast of England). Wild, windy, rugged, beautiful, atmospheric...and on a sunny day better than any beach in any tropical place in the world for conventional beauty. Bamburgh beach is till me fave beach in the world, we still go there when we can, and those Irish beaches look so similar.

I also love all of the photos of your boys...they look so natural, so unselfconscious, they're just having fun in the moment and that comes across...it's very uplifting to see, if that makes sense??

Anyway, off to hit the "post" button hopefully at the right time :D

The beaches are beautiful, i can barely remember when we've ever had a day sunny and warm enough to mess around in bare feet in the water ~ there have been a few but they were before the boys were born!

We're ever hopeful and bring the swimming gear each time we go but it's just way too cold!

Thank you for your comment about the boys, that's lovely to read. i hope they remember their trips for ever and feel sentimental enough to want to bring their own children over - as long as Bill and Ann are around they'll always have a place to stay, she told them both they *have* to come back with their own families!

 I didn't realize that it was that cold. Does it remain that way even in the summer months? Had to laugh at your boys not wanting to move there, when we were home in Pennsylvania this week-end all my relatives want us to move and Tyler just kept saying " we're really not going to move Mom! Are we!" Boys really have a hard time with change, at least all my boys!! I would love to move there to be closer to my cousins. They're more like sisters.
