Greetings from sunny Orlando

Arrived here yesterday after a lonnnng flight to wonderful weather and it's great to be back :)

Flight reservations were hairy, virgin made a load of changes, wrongly, to our reservation which meant we couldnt checkin online and even the airport checkin terminals didnt work. In the end we managed to get a decent upgrade so all's well that ends well but we got there so early that it made for a very long day!

We looked out for Dave and Liz who should have been on the same flight but didn't notice them.

The flight went well and a couple of good movies. Bride wars was funny hehe and Milk was an interesting watch. Food rubbish but we always take our own nowadays so no problem there.

This was our first experience of Disney Magical Express without the booklet or luggage tags since they no longer send these out to UK folks :( We debated carrying the bags aboard but just couldnt face it so we decided to try and get DME to collect them for us like they used to. It worked perfectly, much to my surprise! We just let them scan our luggage checkin bar codes and that was it, we were on our way. Luggage was delivered to the room whilst we were out. I'd be happy to do it again and relieved that the lack of DME booklet was no problem

We booked into Port Orleans French Quarter this time. Contemporary and AKL last time and Wilderness lodge hopefully in October so we felt like a change.

We'd already done Disneys online resort checkin and so when we arrived we headed straight to the online checkin pickup point where we received all the folders of welcome information as usual without any of the usual checkin stuff. It worked great and though it only saves a few minutes, I'd do it next time.

POFQ is as beautiful as ever. Quiet, homely, small and really pretty. We're in a room overlooking the river so we can see the boats to and from downtown disney. The food court seems to have more variety than some others although the shop isn't one of the largest I've seen.

We had reservations at the Liberty Tree Tavern last night for dinner so we had a nice walk to the bus and a shortish 10mins to the park. When we got there we discovered that the resort hadnt added our ultimate park hoppers to the room keys as they should have done. No matter, I had an annual pass anyway and DW had a spare 1 day card from a previous trip so we used those for now and we'll get the hoppers added (we only got them because they were part of a bundle deal)

Liberty tree tavern was great. I always enjoy the food there, it's somehow more normal and nice than all the burger options. This time it tasted even better than normal! Salad to start (yeuck) then beef, turkey, ham with stuffing, wonderful gravy, mac&cheese (yeuck), mash potato, beans and more. We kept the server busy given we hadn't eaten much on the flight and it was thoroughly enjoyed! Apple cobbler with honey ice cream (something like that anyway). This was our first time at LTT since they've removed the characters and to be honest we preferred it. We always felt a little interrupted when the characters kept coming round, nice the first time but then after the fourth time we felt a little ARGH  so we felt it was a better dining experience this time around (there's a rumour the characters are coming back but our server was unable to confirm).

After that it was outside for the wishes fireworks. We have plans to watch it properly later in the holiday so this time we just lazed outside and ended up watching them from outside Mickey's philharmagic. Although you can't get the true story from there, you have to see it from main street in my opinion to see the full effect, we were amazed at how good it was from our location. The fireworks came from either side and totally lit up our view of the sky! We were absolutely immersed in fireworks and it was a great experience.

After that it was Extra Magic Hours till 1am at the magic kingdom so we did all the usuals, Haunted Mansion, buzz lightyear's ranger spin etc. before tiredly finding the bus back to our resort.

Off to the Florida Mall today I think and then the Hoop Dee Doo Musical Revue later this evening

Absolutely great to be here and even more special since I'm here during the Disney Secrets first birthday celebrations Happy Birthday forum :D

Wish you were all here, see you all soon

Glad you enjoyed LTT - we are booked for there in August as it is one of our favs - with or without the characters (although I am sure Disney have reduced the price now the characters are no longer in attendance  - yeah right!)

Have a fab time at the Hoop de Doo - we are going there again as well ad I am so looking forward to it knowing what to expect and not being so scared about being picked on like last time

They do yes  but they're very nice to us and they all know we don't like to be picked on. It's a bit of a running joke, if they notice we've booked, they always book us on the table for two first row centre stage which of course is a fantastic table but also my worst nightmare  but they're very careful to stay within my comfort zone on the interaction  of course the problems come when they're really nice and make sure we have the "best table" and then different/new actors are rotated to the night we're on  then I really do spend the evening cowering under the table pretending to look for something I've dropped

Oh we've been made to stand up and dance (my chair literally pulled out and me hauled up  so very little say in the matter), we've had the whole "oooo you didnt tell me you were coming tonight, let me sit in your lap, hey who's that? you didnt tell me you were married?" thing  and much more besides. I'm a nervous wreck now

I actually prefer the tables for two off to each side but the one time I asked, they all seemed a little upset that I didn't want the usual table. I guess for people who are on stage, it must seem weird that someone can be so shy

Anyway it's a wonderful show wherever you sit

I guess I'd better check the boards before I send PMs! LOL.

Good to know you got in safe and that the flight went well after the early on concerns.

It's great weather in some ways. I'm sure you are melting though. :hug2: With all the standing water and the high temperatures, it's a sauna out there! (A steam sauna, I mean).

Enjoy Florida Mall! I haven't been there in ages, ever since they closed the shop with the Dickens Villages. :(

Take care now and thanks for a great trip report. I sure hope this means we can look for one every day! :D

Well great time so far :) Great weather, lovely resort. Yesterday we had a nice ride up and down the river on the downtown disney boats. Strolled around buying this and that then back for lunch followed by a trip to the florida mall.

We really like the variety of shops at the florida mall and with a lot of building work going on, it looks like there'll be more shops next time we go!

Lovely meal at Ruby Tuesday with possibly a tad too much alcohol

Apple store visited :D possibly not the best idea with a credit card and after consuming alcohol

Many jewelery stores visited too though in compensation :( :cry2:

Sneaked into Ritz camera which is thankfully still open :)

MORE jewelery stores visited in more compensation (can you see a pattern developing? )

Then back and just time to go back out to the hoop dee doo. Wonderful as ever. We've gotten to know the actors over time and there was only one notable change in the lineup from december. Clare had changed but the new one was really good and very funny so that's ok

Today we've had a lovely walk around the resort, DW has been out sunbathing and I've been photoing :) yay :D

This afternoon it's Disney studios for lunch and then later this evening fantasmic :) then I think maybe downtown disney

Disney Hollywood Studios all day yesterday. We had early reservations at hollywood and vine for the fantasmic dinner package. In the end we were especially glad that we did the package since now fantasmic is down to three nights a week, it was really really busy.

We never find H&V to be a great buffet but since the last few meals at the brown derby have been a bit lacking, we thought we'd just do the cheapy buffet this time.

It turned out to be nicer than usual in fact. Very nice selection, very nice beef/turkey and salmon. We supplemented it with a few cocktails which may have helped :D

We then walked round doing all the usuals, great movie ride, animation tour because we love the drawing class etc. All until, it happened, the moment I was dreading, DW noticed the American idol experience.

Now DW watches them all, american idol, pop idol, britains got talent. You name it. Let's just say that they're not really my thing  a few minutes later and we were in the studio.

We were both impressed with the stage and all the lighting, it was really well done. The auditions had been done earlier in the day and three people chosen to sing. The presenter was really good as well and soon the three victims were onstage doing their bits.

Each of them were excellent and the judges made comments much like their real show counterparts. Simon Cowell one was funny  coming out with comments like "you'll get a great job somewhere.... as a CAR ALARM! AWFUL!" hehe

Anyway it was soon time to vote which is done via a small keypad on the arm rest. One of the victims was chosen and went through to the final show of the day and the competition for the grand prize of a gold front of line ticket for a real world american idol show.

Walking out of the studio I thought wow there we go, I survived :) right until I saw DW heading back into line! ERMMMMM ???????? "well we have to queue now for the final" she says. I suspect you could hear my scream for many miles

The final had seven candidates in and although the same format as the earlier shows, it was all much more hyped and exciting. In fact I'd say if you only see one show, try and hang on for the final show of the day.

All in all, despite not being into that kind of show, I was suitably impressed with this addition to the park  All the singers were amazing in my opinion! Better than many "professionals".

Fantasmic was great as always. We had trouble finding the secret entrance for the fantasmic dinner package as its now been rolled into the same normal entrance that everyone uses. So we walked up there with everyone else and at the arena itself they have a special area and a CM directing people with dinner package tickets into it. We got there an hour early and it was already pretty full.

Off out to Winter Garden Village today for a while I think then EPCOT later :D

We've not done Fantasmic in ten years! Perhaps, if we can ever get Seth and his Da coordinated, we can do the dinner package and the show. I've heard good and not so good about Hollywood and Vine, but have always wanted to try there.

Do they have mixed greens for making your own salad from the buffet, Keith? And some lean protein? (Chicken or fish, or tenderloin)?

uscwest
05-06-2009, 10:49 AM
Tink, we've done H&V a couple of times with grand kids. The buffet is nice. Yes it does have chicken and fish on it, or at least it did when we were there. Seth would have fun making his own sundae dessert.

Still here & having a great time

We had a couple of days with afternoon showers over the weekend but otherwise we've had great weather.

So many great times. We went to a great mall at Winter Garden thanks to a Tink recommendation. It was off the normal tourist routes and everyone was SO nice to us there. We had a great meal at Chicago Uno Grill and I mean REALLY great. Service and food wonderful and price was good too. Gave more expensive places a real kick.

Planet hollywood late night meal after cinema. Good use of the Disney UK $15 off planet hollywood voucher there

Going to Morton's this evening for a hopefully nice dinner

keith
09-06-2009, 04:12 AM
Well back from Morton's. Hmmmm

After trying Charley's, Ruth's Chris and Mortons, I'm not convinced that Mortons and Ruth's Chris are really worth the extra. When I walked into Mortons I had a memory flash of recognition and think I may have been to one in Washington many years ago. I think I liked the Washington one a lot but the Orlando one was a bit lacking. Main dining room, nothing really noteworthy other than the prices. Server not very attentive, wine glass/water glasses not topped up for ages, coke refills not brought, sauces forgotten. Overall, not too impressed really.

Charleys seems a much better deal but I want to try Mannys chop house and some others as well.

Shame about Morton's. I like to think I'm a total snob when afforded the opportunity but it just didn't do it for me.

We did find a passable Chinese buffet! At crossroads, Dragon Court. Everything kept hot, a really good selection of food and good service. Stupidly cheap to be honest and the surroundings are going to win any awards, certainly pf changs beats it soundly for quality of decor. However the food itself was great really! Not as good as a good UK chinese restaurant but the best I've found in Orlando.

Isafari

Awww! I'm sorry Morton's wasn't up to snuff. :( Not a very good show for them, given their location and these economic times. Would have preferred that they gave you the best service and quality of food that they have become known for!

Thanks for the update on them though. We've not been in awhile and if that's what they've sunk to, we'll not be in a much longer while!

So! Decent you say? Chinese you say? Well...whadda ya' know about that?! :D

Keith, I'm really sorry to hear that Morton's wasn't up to snuff. I've eaten in a couple of different ones and both the food and the service have been impeccable. I would certainly contact the management at that restaurant and voice my concerns and if they don't respond run it up the line to corporate level. I am a bit biased here because we know one of the head servers at the YSH very well and we have become close friends over the years.
Having said that, it`s the best steak restaurant on site, although they also do fish and chicken meals for the non meat eaters.
It`s nice to be able to have a drink in the adjacent bar while you are waiting for your table and also you can get your taste buds going by inspecting all of the meat and steaks which are hung behind a window just by the entrance to the restaurant itself.

The dress code is smart casual, and the servers are very attentive....highly recommended.

We have had nothing but impeccable service every time we have eaten here. We aren't as close as Terry to this particular server but we ask for him when we go.
