Curious George by H. A. and Margaret Rey! Be sure to get the originals, not the "spin offs." They are nice, but not as good as the original Georgies. :D :D

Are You My Mother? We don't read this one to Seth :( but it's a nice one, regardless.

Where did the baby go? That's another nice one. It's a Little Golden Book, but I don't remember the author's name.

So glad folks are reading to their kids! My mother use to read to me all the time and I feel that it has really played a huge role in my desire to read.

Anyway, let's see...

I will offer one that may be hard to find, but as a kid I thought it was fantastic.

It's about Grover and I believe the title is There's a Monster at the End of This Book.

Read the harder books to her. We read Dr Seuss to Steven when he was Tatiana's age. The pictures will enthrall her too. And you're never to young for Winnie the Pooh.

Spot the Dog
Kipper
Hug by Jez Alborough is a good one.

any books that have things to do - lift the flap, touchy feely things.

Be warned.
She will get a favourite book and drive you mad making you read it 300 times a day.

Funny Bones by Allan Ahlberg

a big skeleton, a little skeleton and a dog skeleton. They live in a dark dark cellar of a dark dark house on a dark dark hill and so the word repetition continues through this lighthearted story for early readers. The skeletons venture out of their cellar one night to find someone to scare, but everyone is in bed so they amuse themselves by scaring each other and playing with the skeleton animals that live in the zoo.

Can't You Sleep Little Bear by Martin Waddell

While Big Bear tries to read his Bear Book, Little Bear tries to sleep, but can't. He's scared of the dark. So Big Bear keeps bringing him progressively bigger lanterns. But nothing seems to work, until he leads Little Bear out of the Bear Cave into the dark nights.

both these were also favourites, Funny Bones is funny and Little Bear has that awww factor!

A new one...I just read to one of my classes today....

HURTY FEELINGS
By Helen Lester

Despite her sturdy size and strength, Fragility the Hippo is a quivering bundle of insecurities. She perceives friends' innocent compliments as insults and quickly disintegrates into sobbing self-pity. It's no surprise that her friends grow weary of her theatrics and distance themselves. Then lonely Fragility stands up to the neighborhood bully, Rudy the Elephant, and the encounter gives her the confidence and perspective to hear sweetness rather than slights in her friends' remarks. Some children may have trouble following Fragility's delusional leaps as she twists compliments into insults, but Lester enhances the basic story about handling emotions with a satisfying slapstick humor that's beautifully extended in Munsinger's hilarious, wildly expressive illustrations of Fragility in all her moods. This is a good choice for read-alouds, but prepare for a chorus of listeners joining in with Fragility's whining refrain: "You hurt my feeeeelings!"

You know? I used to really like the Ugly Duckling too. Is that story too old for your Tatiana?

Mari
22-05-2009, 06:37 PM
No!

I love it!!! :)

We actually have it in Spanish... we also have all the works by Hans Christian aNderson and by the Grimm Brothers... but again, in Spanish

Good! I don't feel so out of date now! :D

I liked Hans Brinker and the Silver Skates too.

When I got a bit older I loved the short series the Borrowers. I liked Misty of Chincoteague, and Stormy Her Foal too. I've always wanted to go to those islands off the outer banks and see the wild horses!

My grandfather allowed me uncensored access to his library, so as a child I read whatever I pleased. Some of it was well over my head at the time, but it laid the foundation for a lifetime love of books and reading. I'm sure your Tatiana will have that too!

Mari
22-05-2009, 07:27 PM
I hope so Tink!

We also had open doors at the library in our house, and my father, although he NEVER read to us, would actually give us extra allowance if we retold him weekly what we had read :)

Tink
22-05-2009, 07:31 PM
My Da didn't either, but did set the example of reading for us. My Grandfather was a great story teller. We preferred that he tell us a story to reading from a book!

It was essentially the same though, eh? Imparting a love of the word.

yeap!

Although I always found it more intriguing when someone read to me aloud :)

The Grover book (The Monster At The End Of This Book) has a follow-up with Grover and Elmo. It's title is something like Another Monster At The End Of This Book.

We also love
The Lorax, by Dr. Suess
I Am Not Going To Get Up Today, by Dr. Suess
Fox In Socks, by Dr. Suess
Three Little Pigs (the disney book that came with a tape from when I was little)
Go Dog Go, by PD Eastman
Limu (about a blue sea turtle who helps other animals)

as well as anything involving cars (for DS) or something remotely princess-like (for DD). And anything that has animals, especially farm animals.
